Buttons on the gear stick??

What are the two different buttons on the gear stick for? I believe one of them is a hold button - when would I use this and do I have to 'hold' the button down? Can these be switched on/off when the engine isnt turned on - just thinking about the kids messing around pressing things they shouldnt!

Thanks

The hold button is basically a manual overide for when you are going up places like snowdon or ben nevis or use it in the winter when it is icey or snowy.

The HOLD button keeps it in a low gear, if pressed while in D then it wont go above 3rd. Use this for slowing down/controlling the speed especially useful going down hill.
I don't think it can be activated while the ignition is off, HOLD should be displayed on the dashboard when it is active, press again to deactivate.

My stick only has the hold button & the big one for putting into reverse so I can't help any more than that.

I meant to put, there are 2 buttons on the gear stick, what is the smaller one ie, the hold button.

Thanks guys for your replies, now I know what it does, and if it lights up on the dash then at least I will know when it is on and if the kids have been messing - although the window wipers and hazard lights on are usually a dead give away!!

Watch your window switches if you've got kids who mess around

Not only did mine keep pressing the lock switch for the windows, but he eventually broke the "missile launcher buttons" and they are extremely expensive to replace.

Of all the threats I make, I think the only one he still believes is that I will cut his fingers off if I have to replace the window switches ever again.

I thought you were suppose to press the big button every time you move the gear stick, for example, from D to P. Is it okay to move it without pressing the big button?

You only need to press the big button to move it out of P and to move from N to R I think. Oh, and into L as well

The full story is:

In D the van has the full range of gears, with the Hold button pressed it will use only 2 and 3 (good in snowy conditions)

In S the van will use only 1, 2 and 3 - pressing Hold forces it to use only 1 and 2

In L the van will use only 1 and 2 - pressing Hold forces it to stay in 1

Good for forcing a lower gear on steep descents

The Hold button has a 'toggle' function; press once to activate, and again to deactivate - no need to hold it down.
