Bongo Fury

Hi,

I need a new exhaust and according to various threads it would appear that a stainless steel exhaust would be a good choice. MIJ appear to be well thought of.
I live in Glasgow so visiting their premises is unrealistic. I have contacted them and they can send me one to fit myself at a reasonable price.
My one concern is that it might not fit, in which case I have big problems. Has anyone been supplied by MIJ and fitted themselves?
I'm looking for some reassurance that things will turn out OK.

so they will fit fine....they do sell the kits on Ebay from time to time too...... I just took my Bongo there as it wasn't too far and I couldn't be ar5ed to crawl under and mess about with exhaust bits

I got mine delivered from MIJ. So far so good.



Having said that I noticed large flakes of rust on the welds for the flexi section.

if theres rust around the flexi section chances are its made of mild steel or they welded it up
using the wrong filler wire stainless wire isnt cheap
u can test it with a magnet

My MOT tester was impressed with my MIJ system....he looked closely at mine last week at the test....

Found that when I noticed our new stainless steel sink was non-magnetic - discovered when using a Rolson pick up magnet to extract a bolt I had dropped into the waste disposal

You don't want any of it to be magnetic, cheaper stainless is magnetic and therefore rusts as it contains iron

I used to work for a refrigeration company and we used 304 and 403 grade stainless steel, the 403 grade is magnetic so was only used for external deco purposes as it rusted.

All stainless contains iron. Whether it is magnetic or not depends on a lot of things, the same piece of material can be magnetic or not just by altering the temperature

I was always under the impression that stainless steel was an alloy and not a steel and its rust inhibition & magnetic properties
where controlled by the higher amount of nickel added into the mix. I know you can make it less/more magnetic but not alter its state completely, but it was 18 years ago I worked in the shop

Normal (carbon) steel rusts because the iron oxidises and then creates more oxide. Stainless steels just have a lot of chromium and normally nickel as well (plus a few other things) and it's the chrome that stops the corrosion - it does actually corrode but creates a protective layer and prevents further atmospheric attack.

From my metallurgy lessons many moons ago, the phases of the metal vary with temperature and composition, and you could have stainless that is magnetic at room temperature or not depending on the proportions of the ingredients. All a long time ago and a bit cloudy now
