Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
There is a Fact Sheet in Members Area about Handbrake adjustment. This says that the handbrake operates brake shoe "cunningly concealed within the rear Discs"
Confusion reigns!
My rear discs need replacing but I before I start the job I would like to know how the above handbrake operates on the discs
Anybody tackled this job ? Any guidance appreciated, thanks.

Re: Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
Rear brakes have discs & shoes operated hydraulically by the footbrake for normal braking & also a drum with the shoes inside it operated by a cable from the handbrake. So the brake disc is a drum is a disc
There is also a factsheet on changing brakepads etc that describes it all - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... kepads.pdf dead easy

You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

changed mine a few weeks ago
you need it jacked up and the handbrake of....so chock the other wheels
took a couple of taps with a hammer and disk came loose
but a really simple job
took longer to jack and remove wheeels than to swap drums
they dont evan have a screw holding them
use a copper grease to stop them rusting to the hub

Re: Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
Thanks for the advice about the rear discs/drums, very helpful. Correct me if Im wrong but I guess the brake SHOES for the handbrake (not the pads) probably never wear out because the handbrake is only a static action as it never really acts on a rotating wheel (unless you do multiple handbrake turns!)

Exactly, unless you leave the handbrake on while you're driving a lotjohn23 wrote:Thanks for the advice about the rear discs/drums, very helpful. Re: Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
yep and you better hope they dont as price is daft
Re: Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
did mine recently, hardest bit was getting the drum/disc off the rusted center, (WD40 and lump hammer)
this is one of those jobs that is easier to do than descibe, once you get into doing it, you will realise its simplez !!!!

Re: Brake Discs and Pads Rear plus Handbrake
Its been said that drum linings are more likely to need replacement because they've debonded with age. Wear shouldn't be an issue.
Prices don't seem to be as bad as they were if ebay ads can be believed.
Drum shoes have adjusters just like on the old drum brake cars. You have to line up a hole in the drum with the adjustment screw, do the screw up until the brake binds, then back in off a notch or two (can't remember exact amount but its in the workshop manual). Once you've done that, I would slacken the cable near the handbarake lever then get under the car and tighten the two branches of the handbrake cable from there (easy to see what to do once on ramps or axle stands) to get the handbrake lever close to correct. You then have plenty of adjustment you can use at the handbrake lever end for some time into the future if you need to adjust again. But adjusting the drum linings first is crucial to good brake performance I found, as without good geometry there, everything else is having to work too hard I suspect. You should only have to do it once every 15 years or so. My handbrake was rubbish before I did this, excellent since I did. Also, use it at traffic lights etc. as I suspect it likes regular use
