Hi
Can't find an old thread that matches this problem, here goes, 2.5 diesel, auto box. when in first and reverse, there is a low rumbling/grinding noise, disappears in second. Also, getting into gear fron neutral can be a bit uneven- not a smooth engagement. but a grab at higher revs. oil level appears ok, but have not done a thorough check with it fully warm, but was half expecting to find it completely dry. By the way, how does the ATF get topped up? I have booked it into a bongo friendly garage (never let me down so far) but would appreciate some pointers.
Any good transmission specialists in Bristol area?

ATF is topped up through the dipstick hole.
Do you know when it was last changed, as changing mine made a big difference to the gearbox performance. Also make sure that you check the level properly - engine hot, car in D, handbrake on and, if necessary, wheels chocked.

Re: rumble in first and reverse
If the gearbox is noisy in 1st & reverse then I am afraid you have geartrain problems within the transmission. Something has failed & is chewing itself & most likely its neighbouring parts up. This will probably be contaminating the oil with metal which in turn causes valves to stick up, possibly the cause of your other issues. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but thats what it sounds like to me. Most uncommon on a Bongo R4A-EL transmission, not un-common with the Nissan variant of the trans (RE4RO1A & RE4R03A) in 300ZX twin turbo's (RE4R03A).

Sorry to hear that - I would have been happy to have been proved wrong on this one. I would be very surprised if the rebuilder couldn't use 2wd internals in the 4wd tranny so you might want to take up the offer above. I am sure only the extn housing & output shaft will be different.
