Radiator question

Post by falcoron » Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:24 am

Hi.
I am going to buy a radiator at some point and wondered has anyone actually bought a Ford ranger one. I know these have a small vent pipe on the cap neck that must be sealed, but i have it on good authority that the ford type have slightly bigger internal cores and let the water flow better and sludge up less.
As the mazda one has the pipes for the ATF cooler does the ranger have these as well.
The Ford one is considerably cheaper from what i can search and if it does the job i may go that route with cash being really tight.
If anyone has bought and fitted one can you please tell me where from and if poss a part number. my mate owns a radiator repair business and can order me a Rad a bit chaeper than i can get it for and he can swallow the Vat. But he need the Ford model no of the rad that fits the Bongo
Thanks
Ron

Not much help with your current dilema, but a bit of info on how to seal the vent pipe (if you go down that route)
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... t=radiator

As a matter of interest, when you say the Ranger unit is cheaper than the Mazda, what is the actual difference in price?

Well again im not sure as the ones i have seen may not be the correct type.
but as a guide the cheap and nasty ones on ebay are, Bongo from £99 to £150
Ranger from £50 To £110. So if this equates to the recommended and the genuine i could save a bit. Problem is when you ask ford they tell you they cant order anything unless i have a compatable part number. And as rangers start in 1998 and the bongo is 1995 that doesnt help things either.
I know people have done it i just need to know what model of ranger has the rad that fits the bongo automatic 2.5 TD.
Thanks

I don't know about Ranger rads, I do understand that some on the forum have fitted Iezura brand radiators and I think, I say think, these have metal top and bottom tanks unlike the Mazda O.E ones, which have plastic top and bottom tanks.
Now If I remember correct these ones have an overflow pipe that needs blanking off.....

I replaced my rad last year and searched the forum/internet and ended up buying one from These Guys - when matching against the O.E rad...... It was as close as possible to O.E and no messing about blanking bits off and other messing about......it just fitted straight in and was on £20 more than the Iezura at the time.......
I was wondering......rightly or wrongly......can you radiator chappie measure up your Bongo Rad and match it from there? shoot be down in flames if that suggestion is not possible or a bit off the wall.....

I think what dandywarhol was meaning was that if the Ranger rad isn't for an automatic then it won't come with an oil cooler in it. Not the end of the world as you can fit a remote one as I have but it would more than negate any cost saving.

What Rons original question which was, quote
"If anyone has bought and fitted one can you please tell me where from and if poss a part number. my mate owns a radiator repair business and can order me a Rad a bit chaeper than i can get it for and he can swallow the Vat. But he need the Ford model no of the rad that fits the Bongo" ....."i just need to know what model of ranger has the rad that fits the bongo automatic 2.5 TD."
In Rons case, cost is an issue and he has a source that circumnavigates Gordon Browns pension fund, and that can't be a bad thing.
Personally, I aint got a clue, but someone out there who has fitted a Ranger rad knows.

I think going back that the Iezura rad has been referred to as a Ranger rad in the past whether it is or I not I can't say..... as for part numbers or has a ranger got an oil cooler....I cant answer either....all I know is....when I looked for my replacement....there isn't that much in it to make a big saving.....

found this Ranger one.........like Dandy said....... No Oil Cooler....... http://www.northernradiators.co.uk/serv ... earch.html click the diagram to see layout......

same here........ http://www.adrad.co.uk/redesign/prices. ... ake=RANGER

I think that is what may be confussing people now and its now clear that the standard ranger rad will not do.
The thing about the lezura rad is its all copper as far as i know and this may be ok but my mate tells me the mazda ones and the mazda copies are all aluminium which dissapates heat faster and better than copper? i know squat about that but the rads that are sold as OE spec at about £130 all look identical to those sold for a little less.
Think i'll pop for one from JAS i spoke to them and he tells me his business would quickly suffer if he sold sub standard parts. His are used in his own stock and he has had no probs. Of course all will say the same but he is right if he sells crap we would all get to know about it very quickly.
waiting for a new genuine temp sendor/sensor thingy ( cheapest around is AVA @ £19.95)
Thanks

Hi. We have just texted a friend as they have a non genuine rad fitted to their Bongo. They replied saying they will call the garage that fitted it to see if they can find the part no.

Good Luck

Thanks dandy kirsty beat you there as usual,
But very intersting.
i was searching for a rad fan temp sensor that goes on the side of the head and looked at this site for cross ref of any other makers bar mazda that uses this.
turns out Ford, Mini, Toyota, Volvo all use the same sensor so i got the OE part nos from the site and rang round.
Mazda £36.25 +vat
Mini £40.00 + vat
Toyota £40.50 + vat
Ford £57.24 + vat
just shows you not always the same price for the same part.
Cheers

Been the case for Bosch parts for years - Volvo/BMW/Ford all use the same fuel injector for one of their cars - same Bosch part number - different packaging - BMW part twice the price of Ford!
