newbie heating not getting warm

HELP, my bongos heating is only just warm after 20 miles, any ideas??
1998 r reg,2 lt 2wd

Sounds like a lack of a thermostat
Maybe had overheating problems so stat removed by previous owner
- do you know the history of the vehicle?

only bought it 2 weeks ago from nma in portsmouth, low miles v clean. not sure of history

Take it back to them to sort out, as it's clearly not right. The Bongo heaters generally heat up very quickly.

Also temp gauge never rises, got stuck on a giant carpark ( m25 ) on way home but temp gauge only just moved a bit,
even though i was stuck for 3 hrs!!

Without worrying you too much, the 200 mile trip might be a neccessity - sounds like the thermostat has been removed, as franco says, to guise a potentially serious overheating problem

hi
i have just got a 2lt petrol '98 Rreg. aswell and mine is the same, if you leave it ticking over the neeedle rises to the 11 oclock position (or if you're in heavy traffic) and when your moving it drops back down to the 'C' as mine does this.
my heaters never get hot hot, just warm, i have no coolant loss....
i have no idea if this is normal on the 2l petrols or not????.....i've finaley got a day of work this monday so i'm taking mine back to wheelquick to see....

When I had these symptoms on my Nissan Sunny it turned out to be a thermostat that wasn't closing off the flow. Although Bongo thermostats fail (I'm told) in the closed position, there's a possibility that these are thermostats that have failed/stuck in the open position. The only way to find out is to open the housing and see if there is a thermostat in there and - if so - fit a new one and see if the problem disappears. If there isn't one in there then that's not so good and a 200 mile trip (or less for joe-robo to Wheelquick!) seems unavoidable (but only once it has been established it won't be a wasted journey - maybe they would agree to the cost of a local specialist fitting a new thermostat, though you'd get to make it clear that if they discover there isn't one then the dealer must be responsible for the consequences of fitting one to what might be a compromised cooling system that might need a new rad., water pump etc.).

Good advice, Mike.
The route of getting an "expert" report and litigation is something that I feel few are prepared to see through.
Your suggestion helps both parties, with minimal outlay / inconvenience.

Take it back........worth the 200 mile trip.... as others say ....no thermostat in the system which is/could be hiding another problem.... get them to fit one....or your money back....

Do you not think that, if there's no stat, they'll apologise profusely, put one in, and send you on your way?

Yes but then if there is a problem, that was shown up by having a stat fitted, they would be liable to rectify...
