I understand they are basically Ford Ranger engines, but with a few minor modifications (extra piping for a rear heater, ?higher compresison head). Hopefully someone else will chime in to confirm/correct that. 8)

As far as i'm aware the WL-T 2.5litre turbodiesel engine is a mazda unit, the same engine block is used in the Mazda B-series or the Ford ranger, (those two respective models are as different from each other as a bongo or a freda, or a Mazda 121 and Mk 4 Ford fiesta)

Yes mike, but the B-series Mazda was released in 2.5 litre diesel form prior to the ford ranger, which leads me to believe that the engine block is a Mazda unit. The ford ranger is more popular in the UK than the b-series Mazda, hence why the ranger is used generically for reference.

Aha! I'm afraid I was only regurgitating what has been said so often on here. So really, what peeps should be saying is 'the engine used in a Ford Ranger', not 'a Ford Ranger' engine.

I must admit, with its v. pleasant performance and given what sticklers the Japanese are, I've wondered how a US engine came to be in Jap vehicle, never mind that Ford had a share in Mazda. The mystery sounds like it might have an explanation

Incidentally - do you know if the 'higher compression head for a Bongo than for a Ranger' bit is confirmed as true?

Hi
The Mazda handbook quotes power as 125ps for the power output of the 2.5 TD.....it is an abbreviation for the German word Pferdestarke...which is German for horsepower....so , it's 125 Hp, or around 92 Kilowatts, (92 from memory)....so, not mind-blowing....pretty normal for an old diesel TD2.5
Cheers
Helen

and of course, excellent torque which - as Top Gear seem to say from time to time - is what so often gives good performance in the 40-60 speed range where it matters :D

Max power is at max revs (nearly)...............max torque is around half that.

The Ford Ranger (except for the US market model) is just a rebadged Mazda B2500 made in Thailand, just as the Freda is just a rebadged Bongo made in Japan.

None of the bits used are "Ford" as such, it's just that Ford have a (big) share in Mazda and badge some Mazda as Fords in markets where they think it will sell more metal.
