overheating

Post by Bongoburt » Sat Nov 21, 2009 11:04 pm

I fitted a new rad two months ago on my diesel bongo, been running good untill last week when water started pumping
back out of the reservoir and overheating. So I fitted a new thermo and still the same, had a gasket test at my local garage and it passed but I`ve been told there not 100% on diesels.I noticed that the water pump bearings are very slack so it needs a new pump.Do you think its the pump or the head gasket?, oil looks fine.cant find any air locks.

Wouldn't the water pump play just loose water, Bongoburt?

Ifit's overheating, are you sure you managed to bleed it properly when you did the Rad? Have you noticed coolant levels dropping in the meantime?

Hi, and welcome.

Have you carried out the full coolant bleed procedure? Fact sheet in teh Members' area.

This is crucial.

The pump does`nt appear to be leaking, maybe its not pumping too good?
I have also blead it many times by tying the bleed pipe to the door frame handle and checking all the hoses are getting warm,am i bleeding it correctly?

If the pump bearings are that bad its possible the impellor had come off - that would cause overheating!
There should be NO bearing play

Pump efficiency depends on the correct clearance around the impeller, probably less important on a slow reving enging than build quality, choice is yours.

Always interesting to read this kind of thread. You are left feeling that to cure cooling problems you have to make your best guess at the component(s) most at fault and set about replacing them - all of them if need be (principally thermostat, radiator, water pump) until normal service is restored. But its always a shame when the work is done after the event (with all the risk that carries for engine damage). You end up thinking that it would be useful to have a water pressure gauge, just before the thermostat, to measure and check healthy pump static pressure when thermostat closed and to confirm successful opening by observing pressure drop once flow starts. In theory, this or some other sensor(s) might tell also if the radiator is not allowing free coolant flow. If only there was a simple way of fitting stuff like this (or is there TGP?).

I suppose the alternative is just to monitor engine block temp as an indication that things arent' right, then try and work out which component is at fault when engine block temps seem too high.

Hi I have been a member for over 3 years and never got round to using the forum, i should have done it years ago then i would have bled the system correctly and may not be in this mess, so thanks you lovely bongonaughts for all your advice.
Q=when purchasing a water pump I asume I will need a W Pump gasket but cant see one in "the shop" do i need one?
They say things all go wrong at once, now my exhaust has broken in half by the smaller box and i was supposed to start work tomorrow after months of being unemployed, oh well at least I was,nt one of those poor people that got flooded out.

V. sorry to hear about your troubles Bongoburt - been there myself (could be there again tomorrow - who knows in this strange world), so know what its like. As you say, its awful but it helps to consider that you are very lucky compared to those who've been flooded out.

Good luck getting things sorted and keep in touch on here. Its a great community to chat with even on non-Bongo things. Lots of folks on here have had (are having) problems like yours. You're not alone - thats the main thing (thats what did my head in so much when I was out of work). :D

Any motor factor will have a pump for a Ford Ranger - same pump - I think the pump came with a new gasket.

The club shop also stocks pumps - order through Ian
