Body panels or panel beating after hit and run.

Post by nigelginny » Sun Nov 15, 2009 12:23 pm

Hi, some one hit and ran my beast (i know who but they wont admit it  ), damaged the rear near side next to the fuel filler cap, anyone know if the panel is replaceable?
shes going in for a replacement cambelt on wednesday, so i am going to ask if they can repair the damage, but i was wondering what they might do, panel beat or replace?
Thanks in advance

Hi,sorry to hear about your bump, any decent panel beater should be able to pull out the bash.

If you report this to the Police as a hit and run they can often match the paint work from both cars.(if they left any)

Ps the fuel filler cap on a diesel is on the off-side.(if it is a diesel).

Thankyou, yea its the offside  ive spoken to my insurance co and they will be dealing with them, it was a white transit that was delivering accross the road from us, it has left some paint marks on our van.

Other than getting a section of panel cut from a scrapper, you'd have to replace that entire side panel I think, hope you get it sorted ok.

Sorry to hear that. I once had a mobile library reverse into my parked car and made a right mess of it. No-one around to see what happened. Another Hit & run - but they had no choice but to admit it when I pointed out the paint marks left on mine - not many nauseous lime green vehicles out there

How sad. There are precious few decent people left it would seem. I hope you get it sorted and the person who caused the damage gets caught.

Thanks guys, ive reported it to the police now, glad that we are fully comp, i think as was said, a panel beater should be able to knock it back into shape, we are pretty lucky as our mechanic owns a bongo, he bought it as an insurance write off so if anyone knows how to repair it he will.

how bad is it - some times they can pull dents out, even if its still a tad out of shape it may be repairable with out removing the pannel if your going to pay for it, some times they use a slide hammer/dent removal tool -drill a small hole and give it a yank - just like the sophisticated scum bags do on crime watch to get the ignition barrel out.

usually though if it goes through the insurance they make a big song and dance, probably replace the whole pannel -this is why a lot of minor crash damage become written off - perhaps they will even quote to repray the whole thing and do several other cars within the same budget / time as fixing yours.

Sorry I had a mint van written off earlier this year - was quite bad but even so -insurance work pricing is definitely sky high.

oh and please beware - Your mechanic might be a great mechanic and might be a great painter too but

(I ocassionally paint race cars on fresh body work(would not advertise it)- but I'm not a painter im a really elctro mechanical engineer -repairs etc are much harder, mixing paints, even the codes dont always come out quite right, metalics are a pain)

1)I tried to do a repair to the mrs mgtf sill as it was so low down/not so noticeable -metalic silver, nightmare(was a blow in job)paint was matched to colour codes, with metalic the more coats that go on the colour looks deeper/darker. I had to take it to my friends paint shop as I just couldnt get it spot on.

2)My dad had his new wing painted on his car by his mechanic and it looked s##t wrong colour/tone and the finish was terrible. The mechanic obviously knew nothing about flatting and polishing. This mechanic preps and paints other cars with no compressed air filtration, heat, no polishing mops or proper da's etc. He once preped a car that went to a proper paint shop for a translucent paint -multi layed, one that changes colour and they refused to paint it.

Thats not to say your man isnt top notch but I would beware if he doesnt have a spray booth and mixing room -he's not that serious.

I appreciate any one used to a bongo can probably strip it with more finesse, but most spray shops are used to stripping a whole range of vehicles from corsa's to porsches-if this is there job one vehicle is not that different to another!(general speaking-obviously there are differences)

Take it to a specialist unless you really know have seen this chaps work. Painting is not black magic -but it can be querky and the experts are the experts. "It sounds like you care about your bongo.

If the mobile library hadn't had a hardback it might not have caused so much damage.
