rubber bushes????

Hi all, we have had a bit of a knocking noise in the van for a couple of weeks almost like a can of beans rolling around in the boot (if we had one!), so my dad had a peek under the back and has said that the rubber bushes (???) have perished, what are these and what do I do! complete noob at repairs and maintenance (as you may of guessed from my previous posts).

any advice (please)

Anti roll bar bushes & drop links are a common issue loads of info on here, easy to replace & not expensive, good idea to replace the antiroll bar brackets too, both mine sheared within a few months of renewing the bushes. It'll feel like a different vehicle once it's done. Good idea to soak the nuts in penetrating oil for at leas a day before doing it - especially if you have to do the front droplinks If you have to get a garage to do it shouldn't take them more than an hour easier access up on the ramps as well.

thanks so much for quick reply. are there any factsheets? had a quick look but couldn't see one on anti roll bar bushes.

also do the drop links need replacing at the same time as the bushes and brackets?? I have no idea what any of this stuff is?

Don't think there's a fact sheet, but it really is just a matter of jack it up evenly, or up on ramps, unbolt, clean the area stick the new bits on for ARB's & droplinks.

had a look through the limited paperwork I have and two rear and one front drop link were purchased from the bongo shop by the previous owners in nov 08. so if drop links were changed then I am thinking if i get the bushes and brackets and have them changed then talk it over with the garage and see what they feel about the drop links! will also get them to have a look at the front.

also what is a cv stretch boot kit (it is on same reciept)?

Cv boot is the rubber gaiter over the CV joints (2 on each side) on the drive shafts to front wheels, common PITA with anything with front wheel drive.

Sounds like they mean:

1) Droplinks need replacing: these are small rod with dumbell ends, each housing a rubber isolated steel bush.

2) Antiroll bar bushes: these are rubber bushes held in place by steel u-clamps and that isolate the antiroll bar from the bodywork whilst holding it in place.

Usually, its best to renew the whole lot together, including the steel u-clamps, as they fatigue with age and all these items are likely to 'let go' at more or less the same age, so might as well do the lot and reset the clock.

No they said it is just the anti roll bar link arms on the front, the bushes etc and all other joints on the van are fine (unlike me!), was quite pleased actually, and am going to have to remind my dad to wear his glasses when he looks at me van in future!!

Indeed! From your first post it sounded like it was the stuff at the back that was giving out. But whether its front or back, and for the minimal extra cost, I'd still opt to replace ARB bushes and brackets while doing droplinks if they looked at all tired. Gets it all nice and solid and clonk free.
