Under drivers seat. Remove centre console (2x plastic nuts) lift carpet on the front of seat and unclip 2 black clips there and one under where the console was. White plastic reservoir marked power steering.

My excuse is I am in the pub.

ATF level should be checked with the engine running and properly warmed up, ie after at least a 20 min drive. I check mine with hand & footbrake on (ideally chocks as well - elf & safety  ), range slowly through all the gears & then let it settle in D for a minute then check the level.

I've just found (new bongo owner!) the power steering tank, and the level is low (good 1 to 2 inches below minimum, and the steering is whiny.

I have purchased some fluid to top it up (dexron 11) , but there is a gungy dirty yellow plug at the bottom of the neck, and I am thinking just tipping new fluid in while that is there might not be a great plan?

Advice needed!

Can I just pour in new fluid?
Do I need to remove the gunge first?
If so, how do i do this? It is at the bottom of a narrow 3 inch neck....

I'm stuck!!

Also, I went in looking for the transmission fluid tank / dipstick, but couldn't see it. Before "going in" again, where do I find this?

I feel so bongo innocent!!!!!

The gungy yellow plug (if I remember correctly) is a gauze filter - pull it out and clean it. The grade of ATF for the gearbox and power steering is Dexron 3 - I don't know what the difference is or whether or not they should be mixed
Gearbox dipstick is under the driver's seat at the back of the engine. make sure you read the instructions on how to check the level (as posted by Kirsty further up this thread) 8)

:) that gives me somewhere to look later!

When I say gungy yellow plug, i suppose i meant plug of gunge, not a plug. Not sure it looked like there was gauze down there, but there might have been (i failed to find the gearbox dipstick after all!!!).

Just don't know how to fish something out from such a long narrow neck - kinda looks like it should be scooped out... :?

I think you'll find the whole yellow thing lifts out, but it's been a while since I did it

The filter bit just lifts out of the PS bottle, then you can flush it clean.

Dexron 2 & 3 will mix OK.

Hi Sharon, Pity you did not make the meet at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton yesterday. Steviebongo could have explained to you what to do, he is a Ford Mechanic.

There's a filter in there? News to me, mind you i've never had to top up (still on max), so i've not had the pleasure of sticking my snout in there yet. (hmm... =P~ Summat to clean =P~ )
