Do you mean the banjo filter on top of the fuel pump? The Great Pretender wrote:Anyone know why it is fitted?

Re: Thimble Filter
My guess would be to trap the stray fibres from a new fuel filter...................

Re: Thimble Filter
Is that a rhetorical question ?
if so, the answer is no, if not, then i don't know

Re: Thimble Filter
I suppose, but don't actually know if all versions of the pump have that filter... It does serve a purpose, as i too have seen the odd strand or fibre caught up in there in the past.

Re: Thimble Filter
I think that the newer type electrically operated pumps don't have this filter fitted.,

Re: Thimble Filter
It keeps me awake at night thinking about it...............
As the thimble filter is the next thing in line from the main filter why? It can't be a finer filter than the main one as its tiny size would make it block all the time. So it has nothing to filter right? Thinking yep correct smarty pants...............
Then it blocks............
So it can't be particals causing a problem as they have been filtered out to a level the pump can cope with.
When I have taken it out to clean there has been no particals or discolouration in the acetone used to clean it.
What causes reduced flow, I don't know, a gum build up maybe? Is the filter causing more problems than it is supposed to solve?

Re: Thimble Filter
That's a fair point Mel... I do know of (but i'm not advocating) a few bongo's that have either had the filter deliberately, or accidentally omitted from the filtration system, it would appear with no ill affects... But of the three or four vehicles that DID run like this, two of them developed the dreaded "O" ring leak...I'm not implying the lack of filter caused this, perhaps the seal would have failed anyway...

Re: Thimble Filter
Interesting observation Ste. Is it just possible then that the banjo thing is not so much a filter as a 'pulse dampening' device aimed at smoothing fuel supply upstream of the pump etc. Would there be a pulsing effect (negative pressure) upstream of the pump, could it cause cavitation etc. if so, as these would be undesirable thingsbigdaddycain wrote:That's a fair point Mel... Re: Thimble Filter
I suspect mike (don't quote me on this) ... Ya know how the bongo is inherently over-engineered? Now maybe,... Just maybe... The filter is there to stop foreign objects from entering the pump whilst the "banjo union"? is removed for servicing purposes? Or... As the last saviour of the pump should the banjo bolt be cross threaded, with the likely shards of loose thread that would drop into the chamber from doing so? I don't really know mike, just chucking a couple of suppositions around...

Re: Thimble Filter
We all know that the fuel filter filters the fuel passing through it but what filters the tiny fibres/dust on the new filter as it's gone from the production line in the Far East, packaged, gathered dust, transported ,opened by grubby hands in a dusty environment etc. etc.???
The thimble filter does that........
Next question - what filters the thimble filter
