Piston Replacement Anyone Been There?

Post by radrob » Sat Aug 08, 2009 6:23 pm

Hi Chaps,
I`m in the unenviable position of possibly changing a piston after a brand new head dropped a valve after a catastrophic failure due to poor manufacture (story to follow, PM me if you want to know who not to buy from on EBay!! As still fighting this one) anyone know how easily this can be done by dropping the sump and how much a replacement piston and rings would be? :(
Regards
Rob

Hi Rob, once the head and the sump are off, its dead easy if you borrow or buy a piston ring compressor. It can be done without but it's very fiddly and the rings are easily damaged. Not sure what it's like trying to get hold of a piston but surely there are some "cooked" engines out there with only head damage you can salvage a piston from.
Good luck with your claim and if you could pm me the dodgy dealer on fleabay I would be grateful as I will probably be looking for a head for a customers bongo later this month.

Best effort so far is £95 for the piston. I`ve blended out the damaged one but haven`t the heart to risk it on someone so new piston and rings it is.
