V6 noisy intake
Hi,
Collected my bongo on Saturday.. amazing.
At first the V6 was as quiet as a mouse, but over the weekend I'm noticing a whirring sound coming from the engine bay.
At first this sounded like a fan kicking in when the engine warmed up (never hear it from cold), but on further inspection I traced it to the black plastic intake on the LH side of engine compartment.
Do they "normally" make more of a noise when the engine has warmed up?

Re: V6 noisy intake
Not that we have noticed. But describing noises is a bit of a problem on a text board ! Most of the Fans in a Bongo are operated by relay so if you can locate which relay clicks in asthe fan starts that might help narrow down what it is.

No extra noises on ours when warm, I hope you soon track it down

Thanks for the replys
Can you hear the intake working continuously? Not really a sucking noise (I know its quite difficult to diagnose on a forum) but a whirring. (Thats why I assumed it was the fan kicking in)

Re: V6 noisy intake
Never noticed a whirring noise on my V6, but quite a few things kick in and out, especialy in these temperatures.
Is this the ear trumpet like intake? Never worked out what it does. Mine worked loose, no effect on performance either disconnected or when refitted. Hayden Callow reckoned it was possibly something to do with the rear heating/ air con system. If so the noise could be being transmitted along it.
Sorry not to be more help.

Re: V6 noisy intake
Um, unsure - the black plastic funnel, right next to the battery. Looks as though it connects to the engine someway (I just assumed it was the engines air intake). I'll pop my seats and inspect further.New Forest Terrier wrote:Is this the ear trumpet like intake
Re: V6 noisy intake
Maybe the Air Conditioning running?
The extra fans that cut in when its on can be noisy!

Re: V6 noisy intake
Hi, yes that sounds like the engine air intake, it's an off round black plastic pipe on the LH edge of the rad as you are looking at the front of the car. The pipe runs down under the car, under the passenger seat, through an air filter, then MAF sensor, into the back top of the engine.
pic of air filter and maf under drivers seat. Ignore red circle, that's the MAF from an earlier post.

Thats the one - thanks for the pics. Just lifted seats. Not sure what I'm actually looking for... but the missus doesnt know that!
So with the engine running, can you hear the intake working? Does it work continuously? Seems to just kick in after about 5 mins or so with me.
Hmmm.

Re: V6 noisy intake
Hi,
With the engine running you can hear the air being sucked in at the front only.
If it's cutting in and out then I'd suggest a fan is doing that.
With the bongo there is a fan at the front behind the radiator, and also underneath at the front of the engine called a scavenger fan. This is quite noisy and doesn't come on often.
You can see it under the drivers seat, look down and forward, kind of like the underneath of a hovermower.

Re: V6 noisy intake
Spotted the scavenger fan. Thanks. Theres loads of stuff down there!!
Noise isn't clicking in & out. After about 5 mins the noise appears and stays until the engine is switched off/cooled(?).
99% sure its coming from the intake - I can hear it in the cab too.

Re: V6 noisy intake
Sounds strange.
I'd have thought if it were a rubbing belt or something catching then it would be there all the time.
Does the noise increase when you increase the revs?
Have you switched off the air con?
How bad is the noise, appreciate it's hard to describe. The intake noise under the bonnet is noticable only when you are standing near it, not when you are driving or inside the car.
Have you checked the air filter lid is on properly, there are 4 spring clips, one of them is harder to get off than the others, could be a leak there.
I'd check that and see if there is a filter in there.
Outside question here, when you bought it, did the dealer change the cambelt? If not dealer, any evidence this has been done?
Also check the 2 belts, there is one for the AC compressor on the passenger side of the engine, and another for the alternator. Turn the engine off first, you can see the alternator one from the drivers side, it's a larger belt. Check it's not cracking and it's taught. Same for the AC belt on the passenger side. They are both tensioned automatically so should be taught.

Re: V6 noisy intake
Nope noise remains the same when revving (although only occurs when engine is warm)
Air con is off front/back
The noise - sounds a bit like a whirring fan - but on inspection, it is most def coming from the intake.
I'll check filter cover/belts. Thanks. Although dealer ensured me filers had been changed.
Cambelt changed when I purchased last week.
Let you know how it goes.
Thanks

Belts are fine.
New Air Filter & box clipped down correctly. Hmmm
Any other ideas?
