Crazy unidentified relay...

Post by rob900 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 9:48 pm

Hello all. Could anyone tell me what the relay sat to the rear of the batttery is for? It's tucked down behind the main fuses. It seems to go into spasm every so often but deosnt seemto cause any noticeable problems. Any advice appreciated. Rob

Glow plug relay if it's mounted on the inner wing? should click on to provide power to the glow plugs when you start, then will click in & out as the engine warms up. There is a factsheet in the members area on fitting a switch to turn it off so it's not flicking in & out - thus in theory shortening the life of the glow plugs.
If not that have you got a Leisure battery fitted, could it be the split chage relay?

Ah thanks. That'll be it. Sounds like someones playing maracas under the bonnet :D . Out of interest do you have any idea what controls the switching?

Coolant temp and vacuum.

The glow plugs stay on for up to several minutes - especially in traffic and at low speed/throttle opening.

I bypassed mine with an led bulb switch - sometimes I leave it on to remind me just how long the lil' buggers are on for 8)

Yes, mine has started doing that, clicks like a mad clicky thing.
