Slipping fan belt

My Bongo has recently developed an intermittent screeching noise which sounds very like a slipping fan belt. Can anyone help with a cure please.

Hi,

Firstly you need to be sure it is the fan belt, if so then it maybe best to replace with a new one and ensure the pulleys are clean and it's correctly tensioned.

It could also be caused by something else, including say a seizing alternator or water pump that is harder to turn and causing the belt to slip.

Not sure on the diesel but on the V6 you have 2 belts, one for the AC compressor and the other driving the water pump and alternator. The latter is self tensioning.

Hope this helps until someone with more knowledge comes along.

Also I think with the diesel there is a potential issue with an exhaust manifold stud that can snap and cause a similar noise.

No exaust manifold stud...often snaps....can be fixed in a couple of hours by a decent mechanic....no dismantling required...

When our exhaust manifold stud snapped, it would screech momentarily when the engine was cold. Other members have suspected slipping belts and have either ruled them out or found them to be the culprit, see THIS advice.

You can check the manifold stud by simply wiggling it (whilst the engine is cold.) If it is broken, it will simply pull out. Not a major panic.
