Leisure Battery Wiring

Hi,

Our friends have a 321Away conversion, but we are having some fun with the Leisure Battery charging circuit when connected to the 240V hookup. Basically they have to disconnect the +ve terminal from the leisure battery for the fridge to work.

The split relay charging system works ok (fixed by adding a relay after a starter battery draining incident).

Does anyone know why this would be the case?

The van does have one of the 12V battery charging units fitted to the 240V consumer unit.

I'll try and post a diagram of how it is currently wired as this might help explain the issue.

The split charging system the converter installed in my bongo was rubbish, always letting me down. Dandywarhol had a look at it and advised me to bin it and install one of Willinton's intelligent split charging wiring looms. Never looked back since as the new system works perfect with no faffing about when changing from 12v to 240v.

Close Morag but its just the loom needed not the battery tray.

If you contact willinton he will list one Im sure

I bought one of those kits friday and met Willinton as he is localish to me, top bloke..

Check what type of split charge system is fitted, chances are it's a cheap relay. Whilst you are there, check all the fuses that have been fitted as part of this, and the connections just in case.

Personally I'd be tempted to change for a proper one as mentioned above, but to get you going it's worth checking what is already there.

You could also call 321 and ask them.

The problem seems to be with the 240v, NOT the 12v charging guys :wink: as good as Willinton's kits are, it won't solve this one I don't think.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I remade a load of the connections from the 12V battery charger unit and hooked up to the mains. The 240v double socket had gone faulty (the 12V battery charger plugs into this) so changed the faceplate for a new one.

And for some reason all appears to be working fine now.

Absolutely no idea what was causing the original problem, so at a loss to understand why the original fault occured.

I was tempted to contact Willington to see about a loom, as was pointed out everything else is installed so seemed a bit of a waste to purchase the full kit.

A good idea to contact Willinton about what you need as that is all he will sell you. When I got in touch with him 18 months ago and told him about my problem he asked me to send him details and photos on what had been installed in my bongo. He then send me only the part of his kit that was required and charged me accordingly.
