V6 Petrol Update on Smell

Post by apole » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:53 am

Hi guys,

Hope you had a great break over easter.

Found the time yesterday to do some more looking to find the cause of the smell my car gets when it's hot.

Found the reason, oil leak dripping onto the exhaust.

With the V6 the engine is at a angle, with the rear of the engine hanging lower than the front.

I have a small oil leak at the front drivers side corner, that is then going down the the lip around the sump pan, and following gravity down to the lowest point, conveniently located just above the exhaust on both sides of the engine.

No idea how to fix the leak so it's a garage job but at least I now know the cause.

So if you have a V6 and it smells funny when hot, check your sump from underneath, any oil here will naturally find it's way onto a hot exhaust.

Sorry :!: won't say it apole  , bet it traces all the way up to the rocker cover gasket, is it takin oil in the first plug on driver bank by any chance apole :?: after close inspection on mine it leaks from front of rocker cover all the way down the front of the engine past all the pulleys and into the lip on the sump where itwhere it runs around the back and drips onto the flexi pipe of the exhaust  the cover has been off before because it got sealant on the nuts etc on mine prob area i reckon and we gonna see more of them in the future:!: it is the more expensive of the 2 gaskets aswell i believe  I must say you got alot more oil present than mine tho apole by the looks of it so maybe it a sump gasket or summit in your case prob not same as mine

Hi Dar,

Yes you were right about the sump bit. The good news for me (I hope) is that it's deffo not from the top of the engine, it's from the bottom at the front drivers side where the leak is so hoping it's easier to fix, and the gasket is cheaper too.

With the V6 being at an angle, any leak will end up on the exhaust which then turns into a big stink !!!

Anyway I'll keep you posted as to what it is, as you say it looks a fair bit so I need to pull my finger out or get a gas mask.

I know Ive said it before but check the front crank seal if you drop the plastic cover and look back at the pulley its quite obvious if thats your problem, you will see a run of oil from behind the pulley. I hope it is just the sump as it cost me a bit to get sorted, but on the plus side a few other faults came to light that were sorted at the same time.
