Hi
I am new to Bongo ownership and have a twin battery Bongo, ( twin engine battery, not leisure and engine

)
I have heard that these come from Northern Japan, where the weather is harsher, and as a result they are more likely to rust quicker, and have had a harder life etc.
Mine looks OK for it's age I reckon, but just interested:
What have folks got mainly, and whats the general view on these twin battery models ?

Hi Kelv(in?). Welcome to the throng. Ours is (was) a cold climate N Japan motor, first reg April 2001, although it was certainly living in southern Japan before its Japanese MOT equivalent (tenken-seibi) in April 2007, the year before it was exported - so how long it spent in the north I'm not sure. Anyway, no sign of rust when I first saw it, and its now been Waxoyled for protection here. If yours looks OK, and it's not yet been Waxoyled, why not get it checked over and reported on, then done? Enjoy it, anyway.
Cheers
David

Hya Kelv (welcome) mine is a Preg twin battery--had it 6 months now--when first puchased my lad & a bloke that works for him changed my oil & filter among other things--the bloke who is employed by my lad is quite knowledgeable about cars (but not Bong's) he went underneath & said he could'nt believe the condition & commented the underneath is as good as the bodywork-------i did of course have it waxoyled when i bought it.

Interesting comments.
Mine has some surface rust on the rear wheel arches which has been "treated" ( badly).
I was expecting the underside to reveal some structural rust issues when put up on a ramp, but my MOT tester gave a positive report.
Some of the underside has been coated with a kind of spray on undereal that looks as though it has a bituminous base, so I am not sure if waxoyl would actually make the future prospects look better or worse.
Has anybody here waxolyed over undereal ?
What has happened since ?

I'm afraid that the surface rust has probably eaten through from inside the arch. If you can't live with it, the only answer is to have the old arches cut out and decent ones welded in - not cheap

Will live with it at present, then use glassfibre, then when someone starts fabricating metal arches for the aftermarket on Bongos I will get some welded in .
Don't fancy the cutting out of old ones method.
Too much like real metal work
