Auto Gearbox Problem

Post by HeskinBongo » Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:30 pm

Hi
First posting so be gentle !

Have used the search facility on this subject , and have found some good info.

However have had a truamatic 220 mile trip today

First 90 miles no problem, then the auto box changes down too third, and the Hold light starts flashing a minute or two later.

This has happened before, hence the search previously.

Pulled over and turned engine off, and restarted and pulled away, got into top gear then within a few seconds
it changes down to third again.
During the 3 hour trip home at 50mph to keep the revs down in the lower gear, i tried pulling over several times, but it kept changing down a gear.
Sometimes it staid in this lower gear mode, even when the Hold light had stopped flashing.
So that light is not conclusive !

Have previously checked Auto gearbox oil level, running in drive against handbrake on tickover, level is ok.

Checked oil quality, oil clean , and does not smell of burnt clutch plates.

Do i need a new auto box ?

Is the auto box controlled electronically, hence the switch ignition off, and restart option ?

Please offer your comments

PS its a 2WD version

Sorry, I'm no expert on the gearbox, but I'm sure this has cropped up before - somebody should be along shortly :D

Check out this factsheet in the members area - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... dlight.pdf it should help you diagnose the fault causing the hold light to flash.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Don't panic. What you need to do is use the factsheet in the members area on this site to read the transmission fault code -- the codes are displayed as a series of flashes of the hold light on the dash. It's easy to do. When this happened on mine it was caused by a sticking solenoid in the transmission -- which was a much cheaper fix than a new transmission. There are a number of possible faults that could be the cause of your problem. The trans will shift down when a fault is detected, and won't go back into overdrive until the van is restarted.

Before confusion starts - its not overdrive nfn - it's a torque convertor lock up facility to give a direct drive rather than a fluid drive but only when the temp. is right and the road speed is higher than 60 KPH.

Any defect will knock the convetor out of lockup mode immediately. As you say, a fault code should be logged in the ECU
