whirring sound on acceleration

Post by flyingdoc » Thu Mar 26, 2009 2:56 pm

hi bongoliers,my tintop 4wd automatic 96 has developed a high pitched whirring noise when i accelerate, as soon as i ease off into a leisurely cruise... it stops whirring ! nothing seems to be hampering its performance generally, I'm concerned it may be auto gearbox trouble or some part of the transmission, any clues?

Almost certainly a sheared off No 1 Manifold stud...Very common and a easy fix by a decent garage or good DIY.
The stud is the only one you can see ....under passenger seat slightly above and right of the alternator....loads of info on here if you search.

Does it sound at all like like air sucking in?

Just to be on the safe side I checked my stub as per photo and I can see threads only now does this mean that there should be a nut on there and it is missing or is it normal just to show the thread, can't see fully from the piccie.

Just checked and mine has nut on the stud so guess yours should have also, I do hope this helps.

Just got her back from garage, complete with oil change ( i just mentioned this morning it was due) nice job done, rather awkward tho to get at but very pleased and only cost me £50.00 I am happy with that. :D Oh and one of the belts was a little loose, lol.
