Thanks to all the help and encourage from the forum.
The Bongo from Fitzhead finally ran today!!
With help from a very good friend we went right through the engine starting at the fuel tank (removed, emptied, swilled out and then refitted), we fitted a priming pump (rubber bulb type). We checked the cam and pump timing. It started with a bit of Easistart and a jump off the Land-Rover. Rattles a bit on throttle, so will get the pump timing checked before we give it any beans.
One injector seems to be sticking intermittently (mostly runs on 4, but occasionally only 3). Has anyone got experience of having injectors re-conditioned??
I'll let you know about the injection timing (might have to move the pump timing 1 tooth, as it looks like some berk -me- got the timing wrong, and can't swing the pump enough to stop the rattle when you open the throttle) which I think will be another learning curve.
Will report any progress as it happens.
Regards,
Fitz

Re: It RUNS!!!
Thanks for the tips regarding the timing. I have timed the cam in correctly in relation to the crankshaft, and I did do two full revolutions (the full cycle) with the socket and ratchet prior to involving the starter-motor. Timed injector pump on white blobs on timimg gears (as it suggests in the manual). I know now that this is not sufficient. I have resolved this issue by booking the Bongo in with Adam at ADS Automotive in Bristol on Thursday. He's going to check out the bleeding of the cooling system at the same time. Will be a tough workout for my 1963 Land-Rover carrying the Bongo on the trailer and a few quid in fuel (about 60 miles each way!!)
With regards to putting my location on the forum, how do you do that? I am in West Somerset if that is of any help! I will pop that on once I know how its done.

Fitz

Hi fitz, old bongo's never die! They just spit their dummies (or coolant) out every now & then.
You mention an intermittent injector, have you ran any injector cleaner through first?
