The FROST catalogue arrived this morning, they sell a product called Block Tester - similar idea to the Magic Coolant in the post by Haydn. It's a test kit for £40 that uses a reagent that turns from blue to yellow if exhaust gases are present in the header tank.
Have a look

They also sell the fluid separately for £7.50. Reckon that a cheap syringe could be used instead of the kit? Might be an option if a sniffer test isn't an option?

It does seem rather expensive for the kit

I agree that a syringe should work.

I'm wondering if the reagent fluid is the same as the Toyota coolant that Haydn spotted - might be an even cheaper option.

Hi guys these kits are for testing for exhaust gases present in the coolant by means of filling the sniffer with a small amount of fluid and the placing in the neck of the header tank and squeezing the black bulb bit quite a few times (pumping action)thus drawing the vapor from the header tank through a 1 way valve, the bubbling action created in the sniffer chamber(the clear bit) and after 30secs+ upto a minute if the blue liquid detects Exhaust gases(carbon monoxide) then it changes to what looks like urine
The sniffer kit or fluid should not come into contact with the coolant or you have to empty the fluid and clean down the sniffer unit..and start again...
But a good bit of kit though

Ah - so this is the 'sniffer' test kit then.
I'll put the turkey baster back then!

I was chatting to a guy from one of the garages that Wheelquick deal with and he said they use that (or similar) to test for exhaust gas. Said it works fine.

I have a system which detects combustion gas (CO2)in the steam, but it can't be used IN the coolant. A MOT tester could use the 4 gas analyser for testing for carbon dioxide in the steam

I thought that Dandy's system was the official one, useful to know the block tester kits are out there.
