Panic! Poorly Bongo.

Post by John and Kim » Sat Nov 01, 2008 1:30 pm

Got my bongo a couple of months ago and has been sat on my drive till I decided to tax it today. Thought I'd take it for a spin and altho' fine at first (just drove round the block) it now will not come out of second and seems to drop to first when you try to accelerate with lots of thick blue smoke billowing out of the exhaust. I'm gutted as drove it back from where I bought it (some 60 miles) without issue. Had a quick look on the forum and saw one similar problem was due to a blocked fuel filter.

Any suggestions??

Update..............

The Engine (in neutral) will not rev over about about 2500 and just billows out unburnt fuel...........

Is the smoke black or blue? Unburnt fuel is usually black/grey. Clouds of blue could indicate a blown turbo :(

Unlikely to be a blocked filter gauze then - as not enough fuel would be able to get through to be burnt.
If you've got a north Japan spec model then it might have an engine quick warm up device which blocks off the exhaust partly. This is activatedby a switch to the right of the steering column - make sure it hasn't been flicked on by mistake. The flap can also stickon which also partly blocks the exhaust and the engine won't rev. Plenty info about it in "SEARCH"
There again you might not have that setup on your van and I'm wasting your time.................

Oh, and - Welcome :)

Thanks for that!

No there no warm up switch on mine, just a corner guide switch/coin holder/driving light cluster. The only thing I've done was take out the centre console to give it a clean so looking around at the various wires under there. I can't see any pipes loose under either seat, so still a bit perplexed.

Hi John and kim, will the bongo tickover ok? Let her tickover till temp gauge is at 11 0 clock, then gradually increase the revs.... If it has been standing around, it may just need a "clear out". I wonder if the fuel has taken in moisture from being stood around? It may be worth adding some fresh fuel, and checking the sediment trap in the fuel filter.

Grey smoke can be indicative of fuel contamination.

First start was a bit rough but only to be expected as it has been very cold, but yes ticks over fine and have driven long enough to get it up to temp. It rev in neutral only up to a couple of 1000 RPM and then just limits and bungs out unburnt fuel. The fuel is only 2 months old but will check the trap, bit chilly and going dark but will have a look tomorrow.

I'm just hoping someone out there has had the same problem?

I had this happen with mine after I drove it back from the seller, it turned out to be the air filter it was damp and fithly, the seller sent me a new filter and all was well, his advise was try reving the engine without the filter in, BUT don't drive it it may suck up some stones, hope this helps

Ah, good thinking sparkymik... I'd have thought the seller would have serviced the vehicle prior to sale though? :?

I certainly hope it is a quick a fix as that... [-o<

Would have been nice if it was but just tried that and same problem altho' you can rev it a bit more when cold and certainly gets worse when warmed up....?

I didn't want to over rev whilst cold but still limited at just under 3000 and the usual billowing out of the rear!

Without wanting to wade into territory I know little about, could this be a sticky EGR valve problem, chums?

check there's nothing blocking the air intake by temporarily removing the air pipe going INTO the airbox. There could be a plastic bag/paper/cloth/badger etc. blocking it.....................

On the EGR valve thingy, I'm not sure if mine is fitted? (2005) as I can't see the pipe that you'd normally block off? I saw the piccy on here somewhere but the pipe is not there? just the one with ridged foil and the throttle cable. I will endeavour to find it, 'where it be?' (as they say in Brisol!)
