Problems starting and FUSES

Post by shaneosborne » Fri Oct 31, 2008 1:49 pm

I have today had problems with starting my Bongo in fact it still wont start. It will turn over but refuses to start. I changed the glow plugs 12 months ago, surely they can't be the problem again.

Also, surely the engine can start without the use of glow plugs as I always thought that glow plugs are rarely used unless its very cold.

Also, after looking under the bonet and in the centre there is a fuse box, I opened this up and it seems as if there is a fuse missing labeled MAIN. Is it missing or is it suppose to be empty. I have never noticed before and have never had problems until now.

Any help please?

P.S Also, when turning the key all I get is smoke and thats it. NOTHING....

Hi, had the same prob with my second car (BMW 525TDS) this morning, it did fire up turnover twice then died again, it did this about 10 times. I finally resorted to a can of easystart and it started straight away.
Will be getting glow plugs seen to next week.
Sorry can't help re fuse!
Cheers Tony,

When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the glow plug relay clicking? - it's under the bonnet, on the driver's side, and it's got a stiff polythene cover.
The glow plugs on the Bongo are used a lot, even staying on after the engine has started. It's not unusual for cheap ones to fail in a year. This cold spell will soon show duff plugs up.
No idea about the fuse, but I can't see how that can be the cause of not starting.

Yup, I can hear that. It clicks around 10 seconds after the light on the dash goes out... Any ideas..

Make sure you are actually getting voltage at the glow plug rail.
Are you getting fuel through ok? are you using veg oil at all? When we hit a cold spell last year I had to reduce the ratio, but bunging a blow heater underneath for 10 minutes got it going the first time it kept turning over without starting.

.

I'm fairly certain that there is an "empty" fuse labelled MAIN on mine as well, so think it's standard for it to be missing. Will check tomorrow.

Just a thought.. Check fuse 9 in the cab (15 amp 2nd row down 1st on left, blue one).
Pulled mine by mistake once & had similar starting problem.
Replaced it & all was fine!
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...
