Squeaky Belts

Post by Lloydy » Sun Sep 21, 2008 10:13 pm

Elmo has spent another weekend on the ramps and stands being serviced and prepared for a trip at the end of the week.

As part of my long list i attempted to cure the sqeaky belts i have been suffering (it is the belts). I have read that they should have about 6-7mm movement and mine (which are quite new) must have had 17mm,

I tightened them up to the above and now they are even worse!!

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Lloydy

Hi...I would suggest that if you have been running with them loose and squeeling they have been slipping and probably overheated and become "glazed"...Suggest you fit another set of new ones and ajust correctly...Then as new belts streach check them and reajust for the first couple of weeks,,,,,If the squeal at all ajust at once before it happens again..
WD will not be a long term fix..It just disguises the problem....putting water on does the same.

Guess it may end up new belts then eventually.

Shame, they were new just before i got it i think.

Have you any idea which belts i need Haydn? Not something i have done before!

Thanks,

The correct figure is 7~9mm new and 8~10mm used for the alternator between the pump and alternator pulleys
and 9.5~11.8mm new, 11.0~12.5mm used on the longest run of the a/c belt.

THESE FIGURES ARE WHEN A 10KG LOAD IS APPLIED TO THE BACK OF THE BELT

Personally I'd be deflecting the alternator belt about 13mm with my fingers and the a/c belt around 15mm if i hadn't a 10kg spring balance handy, otherwise you're liable to damage bearings

So does that mean 13mm one way or up and down?

Hi Lloydy, check that you have the correct profile on the belts,Ie not too thin,if this is ok and the belts dont look too worn, reverse the belts and put a slight smear of brake fluid on them.Brake fluid will lubricate and give grip.

Cheers Mal..

Good point teenmal - the belts could be hitting the bottom of the vee and slipping. =D>
