Bongo Fury

Was out and about today, just heading into Dorchester & the speedo died, then the rev counter dithered about & died too, I parked up for 5 minutes while I popped into hospital (not for the bongo ), then when I came out it wouldn't turn over. Checked starter battery voltage & it was down to 11.something, luckily LB was fully charged so I disconnected the positive & jumped it across to the SB & it fired up ( thank god for the LB)- but there was no charge going into the battteries There were no indicators up on the dash as there were when the alternator went before
I managed to get home without the fuel solenoid valve closing , checked all the fuses, everything seemed ok, no voltage coming out of the alternator, but it was receiving field voltage, so I popped down to Chris Putt who I got the recon alternator from, he checked & confirmed it was goosed, turns out it was 3 days away from being out of guarantee . On the way down to him the glow plug light started flashing, which I guess was telling me I was just about to lose the fuel solenoid voltage.
15 minutes later, new one fitted & another years guarantee - hopefully this one lasts a bit longer
I have no idea why it went, it was charging fine a few days ago as I checked it when I was trying to find my LB current drain (stereo - cheers guys switch fitted in the ignition supply wire).

Good it happened now than when out of guarantee and you were off to SW Bash. Must ask you by the way Kirsty. I've been trying to find your thread on rust near where the aircon drips water out below the vehicle. I discovered a significant, but localised bit of corrosion on mine while relaxing underneath it yesterday. It was at front end of n/s 'chassis' side member just where there is a triangular box section that joins to a cross member. I've taken pics and will post a thread when I get a moment (!) but thought I'd ask you first. Seems this could be a 'type weakness' worth alerting (again) owners and prospective purchasers to.

Hi Kirsty, stroke of good luck being still in waranty, not how it normaly works.

Mike, could the rust be caused by acid overflowing from the battery, possibly caused by over filling, or over charging?

Quite good of him to give you another 12months on the alt

Most factors and garages would only let it run til the end of the warrenty period(the magic 3days)

I thought of that, but this is/was the non battery side until the LB was fitted. There is a boxed secion above it with wiring conduit (at least I think it's wiring though can't see inside the conduit) going into it and wasn't feeling like lifting the engine covers to trace what it might be connected with. I'm going to check out Kirsty's 'rusty cills' thread to see if its the same prob she came across and I'll try and post pics tonight.

-Similar symptom, Kirsty, with a newly replaced alternator & I found the plug which connects the sensor under the cowl, (just behind the handbrake) was loose. In spite that this may be what goosed the alternator, the very very nice people at http://www.startermotor-alternator.co.uk/ replaced it for me under warranty.
