floppy wipers

my wipers are flopping too low past he windscreen rubber surround and make an really annoying clunk as well as having a great added effect of occasionally pinging a wiper blade off the arm everyonce and a while.
i thought that the solution would be to remove them and refit them slightly higher so they dont go down so far but im worried that ill get the opposite effect of the driverside wiper going too far to the right.
at the height of its sweep the drivers side blade just about touches the windscreen rubber so im worried itll go too far if i change.
ive also noticed that at motorway speeds i dont have the problem as the wind resistence seems to keep them off the bottom.
will removing them and refitting sort the problem or is it just a knackered motor giving it too much flop?

What you propose is the usual fix for this. Just one notch on the splined shaft should do it

looks like a fight with a pair of wiper baldes int he rain for me when i get home

I guess you can only 'suck it and see'. Hope they come off the splines OK. Thing is, why are they doing it. Is there play in the system and if so, is something either in need of adjustment/tightening up or is it on the way out? You might want to investigate?

The mechanism is all nicely visible once you lift the bonnet, I'm sure you'll see if there's anything amiss, hopefully moving it round a spline should be ok though.

You really want to avoid them contacting the windscreen rubber at either end of the stroke as they will wear notches in the screen rubber and can cause leaks etc. This was a problem seen on the MG RV8 where the wee 11" blades had very little room for comfort on the screen.

Mine are lined up level against the black strip on the bottom of the screen, the sweep seems right set up that way,i removed mine to re-spray the wiper arms last year, only then did i notice they weren't as level as they could be.

Are you sure that you haven't just got longer blades than they should be?
