Belt/Squeeky noise???

Post by Ramsey » Mon Sep 08, 2008 9:47 pm

I have recently had my bongo serviced so she has had some good TLc and a replacement belt but I still have a squeak.
It sounds like a belt slipping and though I must admit my aircon belt needs replacing I dont think its that. When I put the aircon on it gets louder but also my engine revs drop and the engine vibrates. I think the noise is more to do with the engine vibration rather than aircon belt, anyone have similar noise as its doing my head in!!

Thanks

Rams.

Amazingly quick responses, thanks. Where abouts is the manifold, under the metal cover?

Loud squeak that increases with frequency as the engine is revved? Or a quiet chirp that gets quieter as the engine warms?

I noticed that you have had a new fan belt you see? These stretch quite quickly after fitment, and can often squeak/chirp (depending on how much they have stretched) quite quickly after replacement.

To tension the belt, loosen the two bolts that hold the alternator on,then adjust the nut on the long threaded bolt to tension the alternator against the belt, then tighten the bolts to the alternator. I'd say you are looking for about 4-5 mm of belt deflection. It's important that you don't overtighten the belt though!

This site is amazing! Im always suprised how helpful people are on this site. Thankyou very much.
One last question, is it a big job, i.e. mechanic or is just a matter of getting the old bolt out and replacing it?

Just took the cover off to have a look and all looks ok though im not sure i would see anything?
The squeak/belt noise definitely seems to becoming from the the alternator side. Could it be the belts too tight?
The noise gets very loud when the engine tick over drops when the aircon is put on??

Hi m8, If it is a stud problem, I t will be noisey at start up then you get a noise when driving until it gets warm,
If it is a stud problem it is a job for a garage, It took wheelqiuck about 6 hours, They had to drill it out then fitted a new stud and gasket cover,
Speak to hayden callow he has done he's at home.
Good luck.

The engine rpm shouldn't drop when the aircon is switched on - there's a little vacuum operated gadget on the fuel pump which raises the rpm back to 800 when the switch is pressed. You should also be able to feel the throttle pedal twitch at the same time. LIGHTLY spray WD40 on the belts as the engine is idling - that will tel the source of the noise if it disappears

Must admit the noise is worrying me, i was going to record it and youtube for your further expert analysis.
My Dad said spray wd40 on the belts and I said that was not a good thing to do, can you do that then?
Which belts? There are two teethed belts on what looks like an alternator and the aircon belt, all of them ?
Just spent nearly £250 on a service and new water hose so another £200 quid plus a MOT is going to kill me.

Cheers,

Rams.

Try dusting a little talcum powder on the suspect belt & pullys, this usually works.
