If it's a little plastic thingy then no one is too sure what they do (I think) but they can be bodged by inserting a small piece of pipe either inside or outside of the break. I fixed mine with a Biro refill. There's a post on the forum somewhere....try this link http://tinyurl.com/3474fu

Good luck

Probaly your best bet is to get an EGR blanking kit from Allans, Plymouth, for about £12. Apparently easy to fit, and on my 'To Do' list.

The kit's are good, I've fitted one but in the process either broke or discovered the the broken plastic thingy. I think this may be what your mechanic is referring to?

If it' is the part that dobby is referring to, Al has seen dozens come in from Japan with that part broken. It doesn't usually cause a black smoke problem?
Here's the instructions dobby gave when he fixed his, if it sounds like the same part, you're sorted:
I reamed the inside of the valve and the broken bit out to a diameter that would receive a piece of Biro refill pipe to act as stub/spigot and then carefully glued the two parts together, checking that the valve still worked. Wrapped it in duct tape to add a bit of support.
