Bongo Fury

hi all,
i don`t know who remembers,but i have the tappetty v6,and have pretty much narrowed it down to worn camshaft or sticking hydraulic lifters(it was stood for about 10 months after importing after the guy realised he couldn`t get it sva`d-i bought it and had it converted to a camper,then registered it myself)another forum member phoned me once to offer advice when i read that he replaced valve seals for someone.i wondered whether it would help my bongo,but he said only if it as burning oil.it does produce a small amount of white smoke on startup,uses a tiny amount of oil,loses no coolant at all,and has carried us for 4,000 miles with no problems.it returns up to 32mpg on a steady run.
now that our main holidays are over for this year,i plan to investigate further.i have tried in vain to find the correct engine manual,and the closest i have is the mazda mpv 2.5 v6 petrol dohc.
all i really need is info on the timing alignment,and torque settings for the tensioner,camshaft and other important bits.is there anywhere that i can get this,or would anyone be willing to photocopy/scan anything that you ave,to help me?i`d be willing to pay,of course.

have recently bought a diesel Mondeo which was driving me nuts with the valve lifters tapping away...thought I go for the easy option first and bought a bottle of oil treatment formulated for noisy lifters...about £6.50 from Halfords...It worked and within an hour noise gone and hasn't returned....Was unbearable when cold and still there untill really warmed up.

Good luck with it. 32mpg is unheard of with a V6 - astounding if accurate and enough to make one get ones thinking cap on

Hi Hoggy,if you are getting 32mpg with a 2.5 v6 petrol,and the valve clearance noise is not severe I would tend to leave well alone.Try some wonder oil as some one has mentioned.

What ever you do all the best.

32 mpg - good stuff - maybe we should all loosen our valve clearances a bit to see if our guzzlers can get somewhere near that.......................

Iam only getting about 25 mpg mix 70% motorway 30% A&B roads not to heavy on the right foot either!

I recall Mr H trying various oil additives and oil changes..
Give us a shout if needed..

yes,indeed i have tried various additives in the past.i will do one more engine flush,then oil and filter cahange and probably leave it at that.i will investigate the timing belt,as the guy i bought it from assured me it had been done,but..............you never know!!!!
junior hogggman is now in plaster from hand to armpit,and is due back at the qmc on monday.if all is well he stays in plaster for 6-8 weeks,but if not going well he may have to have it pinned.

Years ago (mid 1970's) I used to work on Hillman Imps and they all had noisy tappets with an overhead cam which had to have shims put in of various thickness to stop the tappets ratteling, quite a complecated process, I don't know it the Bongo V6 is OHC but if so this could be quite a complcated process involving microcromiters etc. if it's working I would suggest IMHO leave well alone.

32 to the gallon i swop ya my v6er you get a quiet one and i can stop my love affair with the petrol pump, prob solved

by the way good luck to junior horrid bein in a cast, i was in for 12 weeks, plate 10 screws and a couple of painfull ops wouldn't wish it on anyone, then you get the arthritis that goes wiv it afterwords and all in the name of a few bevvies to many
