Worried about wear patterns on my tyres- advice needed
Hello all,
Just renewed all my brake pads and put 2 new brackets and bushes on the rear anti-roll bar. As I had to take off all the wheels I noticed some worrying things:
I have 215/65R/15C 104/102 T fitted on rear
I have 195/70R/ 104/102 R on front
1) Both front tyres worn around outside edges. Do you agree that is most likely due to poor tracking? The wheel wobbles at about 65 mph but nothing serious at all. The tyres are 12 months old and show completely even wear on both outer shoulders, probably both fail the MOT next week.
2) More worrying I found both inner shoulders of the rear tyres show equally as even wear but probably not an MOT fail. Is that due to under inflation? I am running 32 psi in front and 34 psi in rears.
I have read the side-wall info on both tyres and they say that max PSI pressure is into 50s, but surely they shouldnt be run anywhere near that?
Over to the experts please

Two or four wheel drive Bongo. My four wheel drive Bongo has 215's all round and runs perfect. Many other members have the same setup.

4 wheel drive and all 4 tyres were replaced a year ago as I bought it from a very reputable supplier.

You are not the first one who has had this problem. I think that your best bet is to go with 215's all round of the correct load rating. If you still have problems then the tracking specification can be found in the members section.

IMO your tyre pressures are too low, I tend to run at around 38 all round unless I'm carrying heavy loads, in which case I bump the rears up a couple of psi (if I remember
).
Get your tracking checked - between -1 & 7mm toe in, parallel seems to work ok for mine & several others, & wheels balanced.

Agree with Kirsty - even wear on fronts indicates front pressures too low. Inside wear on the rears is a bit more concerning as nothing can be adjusted there - even fitting lower springs wouldn't affect the rears wear

Worth having a look at the factsheet on Tyre Wear. It suggests that outer edge wear on the front is fairly common & maybe nothing to worry about,

Tyre pressures seem low but check the load rating on the back tyres. They need to be at least 96.
I had 91's on my last set of alloys, they split all round on the inside. Scary!

When you say "outside edge" do you mean just the outside and not the inside edge? If so check tracking, if both edges of the tyre it is under inflation.
Are you shure the rear tyres were new? If s/h the wear may not be related to the Bongo.

I've just re-read your post monkeyboy - even wearing on the outsides of the fronts is almost certainly tracking.
