Sediment and Battery light staying on- brightly ! HELP!!

Post by Moondance_Scotland » Mon Aug 18, 2008 4:46 pm

Both my charge light and sediment light are lit brightly on the dash, they have been like this for a few hours to- day. What does this mean? (Moonshine_Scotland) Very concerned, read the similar article in FAQ but not enough info there - mine has two batteries, no leisure set up as yet, not a conversion either.

It usually means that your alternator has packed up. If you've got a tester, check the battery voltage with and without the engine running - it should be a couple of volts higher with the engine running.

I'd agree with Franco, sounds like the alternator.

Yeap your alternator has gone......
if the lights are still on when your ignition key is out you will have flat batteries in the morning.
sometimes the speed of discharge also kna***rs the batteries
disconnect the battery earth posts and source a new alternator
or be prepared for two new batteries and an alternator at worst!

Just be carefull when purchasing another alternator as there was a batch of alternators that was for sale on ebay a couple of months back that were dodgy something to do with the bearing failing almost imidiatley, cant remember the sellers name but someone else may be able to confirm.

T'was me that bought one, still got it if its any use to anyone who can source an 8mm shaft back bearing that will fit (needle roller bearing rather than the inadequate plain rollers it came with).

Apart from that its as good as new.

Can't remember the ebay name from where it came but was somewhere in Leicester I think.

a voltmeter across one of the battries.
Should read 12.5 volts +/- engine off.
Should read 14.5 volts +/- engine running.

12.5 engine running = duff alternator/broken wire/poor connection.

Double check by putting the red voltmeter probe on the BIG alternator terminal and black probe to earth again should read 14.5 +/- engine running.

I had these two lights on last year - the problem was caused by water in the gutter below the windscreen, there is a drain hole there that gets blocked easily.

Zigzag - what was the rain water dripping on that caused the problem? Was it on the fuses?

I bought a brand new Bongo alternator from http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/thestartermot ... torco.ltd/

£110 + £15 postage.

Much cheaper than the others I saw advertsied... and works a treat!
