Hi Karen.

I fitted just the one contact to my starter motor quite a while back, and cleaned the other one up ok. I have had no starting problems since.

The kits from Southampton come with both contacts now -- I bought from them in April. No starting problems since.

Help. I bought the kit, but one of the contacts looks the wrong shape. Is it ok to use or should I wait until I can get a replacement?

I would be inclined to try the new contacts anyway -- it's not too much time wasted if they don't work. At worst you can clean the old contacts up a bit and put them back in until Southampton Auto Electrics send the correct contacts. It's also possible that your bongo has a different starter to most others -- which could be the case if it was kitted out for extreme cold weather.

if you have the winter pack on your bongo then you have the uprated startermotor that no one has managed to get a replacement set of contacts for

I don't think I have the winter pack. It's just that the contact is the wrong shape.

I've put some photos up here.

As you can see, the new contact (fitted) is symmetrical as opposed to the old one.

From the photos it doesn't look as if the incorrectly shaped contact will obstruct the plunger. You could phone Southampton Auto tomorrow and see if you can e-mail the pictures to them -- they will be able to tell you whether the differently shaped contact will work.
