very slight coolant loss in hot weather?

hi all,
i noticed after returning from the bash,that my coolant header level had dropped very slightly.i topped it up,only about half a pint,and this is all i`ve put in since i got it in early february.is it normal to lose a small amount through evaporation in hot weather?

thanks,i was hoping that`s what it was.i hope you are well?did you read my other post regarding the mazda manual that i located?it looks the same as far as removing the camshafts etc is concerned.

As the cooling system is a sealed system, there should be no loss. You can't get natural evaporation from a sealed system ??

I have had no loss since November with 7,000 miles on the clock but then my purring Bongo needs serious attention apparently.

Ive had my bongo for 18 months and had no loss of water in that time, with the exception of having my coolant changed when i fitted new hoses. it should not lose that amount of water.
Hoggman i suggest you get a coolant alarm from Haydn and check your hoses.

it was only from slightly above the full line to slightly below.granted,i may have noticed that it was above the line when the engine was running and hot?would that give a higher reading anyway?

What emphasis does that have on losing coolant?

The overflow pipe, is direct any overflowing water away from the header tank area.
These systems are sealed and pressurized and do NOT suffer from natural evaporation. Even a central heating engineer will tell you a pressurized system should not lose fluid.
Don't get me wrong here, I am not being pedantic, but what qualifications do you have to come up with this theory?

4 years in college City and Guilds, pt's 1 & 2 in mechanics, then 4 years for my BTEC qual's.

Jamie, As Pete said Yes.
The reason for the expansion tank is when the water gets hot, It expands and needs somewhere to go, ie, into the Expansion Tank.
That's why there is a fill level and why you don't fill the tank to the top.
Another reason why you don't check your coolant level when the water is hot. Do it when cold.

Got to agree with all that...had Bongo 21 months and NEVER had to top up...no loss at all...the differance in level will be about 1.5 cm's from cold to hot...The coolant in your expansion will be almost as hot as your top hose...VERY HOT.....
If your level is dropping then find out where it is going before it gets worse....Trouble is with such a small loss it is going to be almost impossible to track down...probably just a clamp wants a bit of tightening.
You can get a "tracer fluid to put in the tank and then with a ultra violet torch it shows up any weeping very well.
