Automatic Gearbox

Post by Benjymac » Sat Jun 21, 2008 8:27 pm

Hi,

When I am driving in 'D' and floor the accelerator the kick down function doesn't appear to work. The Hold switch function does not work also.

Does anyone have any ideas as to whether there is maybe one problem that is affecting both systems?

My mechanic seems to think that the gearbox uses electronics rather then any form of mechanical device for the kick down. Is he right?

Curious to see if anyone has any thoughts.

Cheers

Can't help with the kickdown bit...Does the light to the ashtray work? There is a plug under the centre console (near to the light) If this is uncoupled, the hold function no longer works, i think it's linked to the ashtray light, that's why i mentioned it.

Thanks Bigdaddycain will go and check.

Will let you know if it fixes it.

Anyone got any ideas regarding the kickdown?

(I am guessing 90% of the Bongo fraternity are at the Bash!!)

Most automatic transmissions include a switch on the throttle linkage that will force the transmission to downshift into the next lower ratio if the throttle is fully engaged, dunno if this is the case with the bongo, my understanding of auto gearboxes is limited to the point of it could possibly be a form of black magic that causes the gearboxes to function.

All i could suggest are the most basic of fundamental checks, those being fluid level and condition checks, perhaps the box won't kickdown if the level of the fluid is a little low? A sort of built-in safeguard feature? :-k

Hi
I'm sure someone recently posted that there is a throttle position sensor on top of the fuel pump?....and this can be re-set to give a more responsive kickdown. If you find this device (do a search), make sure that you scribe the moving part against the body, in case you need to re-set it.

Thanks again for your responses. It gives me something else to look at. The gearbox oil level is okay as I have just had it replaced (along with all the other fluids in the Bongo!!).

I will pass these comments onto my mechanic and see if he can come up trumps.

(May I add that when I say my mechanic he does own his own business and works on other peoples vehicles. I didn't want people to think that he was MY mechanic and wondering if I also had my own gardener, butler, maid etc. SO in case people were wondering, probably not, I am not a Lord of the Manor  :) )

On the drivers side of the gearbox NR the top are 3 electrical
connections one gray 2 black it may be worth undoing them
and cleaning the contacts, I take it it changes up normally
all 4 gears then lock up? the box is controlled by a box of
tricks under the passenger side of the dash and a electrical
solenoid pack in the gearbox, if the hold light does not
come on check if the bulb is OK it usually flashes if a fault
is present and by linking 2 contacts it can be used to read
the fault codes there's a fact sheet on here somewhere giving
details.
