Turbo Working?

Hi all,

First post for a relatively new Bongo owner.

We've just had our Bongo serviced for the first time and my mechanic is convinced the turbo isn't working. I must admit when I bought it back in Nov 07 I thought it was a bit slow but having nothing to compare it with I assumed that this was the norm.

We get no turbo noises, no kick when (if) the turbo starts spinning and most worryingly it won't go over 60mph up any sort of hill. When I dab the accelerator there is a noticeable delay before the engine revs to say 4000rpm.

Is this normal?

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the filters when I've sussed where they are.

It's the inclines where I notice the lack of speed most. Having said that its not particularly quick at getting up to speed on the flat either although i've had it up to 85mph. Generally I just cruise at 70.

All the other turbo vehicles I've had produce the usual whizzing sound and give you a push in the back when the turbo kicks in.

came in but it definitely worked plenty of power, look on the
injection pump you should have a small bore rubber pipe
that runs round to the turbo, these are often off, don't
know if they blow off or are taken off for some reason but
if it is put it back and you will feel the difference.

Sounds about right to me. Check this thread about the same symptoms...........

It does sound like yours is a bit flat but Bongo's aren't exactly sporty. Have a look at that little pipe .

Without the little pipe the injector pump doesn't know the turbo is blowing and so doesn't pump in the extra fuel needed to make best use of all the extra air.

If that is off you will find it goes much better with it re-fitted but your MPG will probably drop as a result.

I couldnt wait to get back from work to check this injector pipe thing out. Surely it couldn't be that easy and surely I wouldn't be that lucky. I whipped the drivers seat up and lo and behold no vaccume pipe! I found it laying on the engine and shoved it back onto the injector pump and took Billy for a test drive.

Blumin nora the difference is unbelievable. Our once docile bongo now goes like the clappers! Straight up to 70+ uphill on the local bypass. .

Cant thank you Bongoliers enough. I owe you all a drink. We're driving out to Klagenfurt in Austria in four weeks time and this will make the journey so much easier.

If you are going long distance, have you taken precautions. I'm thinking of the low coolant alarm. Get one fitted a priori if you haven't got one already. The next pipe that comes off could be a coolant one, and you don't want a cracked head in Klagechexkenffffurrrr....wherever

When we bought our Bongo we spent hous surfing the Fury site and concluded that the engine alarms were well worth havng. Ive fitted a Mason alarm and have purchased the water level one but havent fitted yet. Suffice to say it will be going on before our hols.

I think you need to show him what was wrong............................he might learn something.
