leaking diesel

i successfully changed my fuel filter last night and when i started again which took a lot of turning over which i assume was due to the fuel having to flow through the filter, anyway i was a bit shocked when i saw a steady drip of fuel coming from around the fuel pump area- it was getting too dark last night so will have another look today to see exactly. i am a bit confused as to why this has suddenly happened, i returned from a long drive on monday night so i would have definitely noticed if i had been loosing fuel before.
does anyone have any ideas why this might have happened or has it happpend to them? i am not too keen on taking the fuel pump apart but loooks like i'll have to
i think i have loooked at most of the threads about leaks but if anyone has any ideas i would be very grateful

cheers
paul

It appears to be a common fault for the O ring to fail. If you find Dandywarhol's thread it shows how to fix it with a series of photos. Just a coincidence that it should fail after changing the filter - unlucky! :(

i followed dandywarhols very good pictorial guide to changing the o ring seals on the front and back of the fuel pump, unfortunately the leak is still there and look to be one of the gaskets leaking. the bongos been out of action for 2 months now :( :( :( :( :(
i would attempt it myself but looking at the exploded diagram from the russian owners site it looks a bit daunting, has anyone tasked a specialist with doing a full seal and gasket renew? i was wondering if anyone may have an idea how much it would be if i provided all the seals and gaskets? and does anyone know of such a specialist or member who might take the job on for payment in north london???

where abouts from the pump is it leaking? I've just changed the same seals as you but found I also have a leak coming from the 3 side bolt plug on the rear of the fuel pump. This one drips at start up but then stops as everthing warms up.
I've got the replacement seal from Lawson Diesels and am now waiting fo delivery of the 3 sided bolt socket which I have ordered from Merlin Diesels.

The leak could be coming from the plug at the rear of the pump. The seal is easily replaced.Remove the injection pipes and the connectors these are screwed to,be careful not to lose the springs etc.which come out with the connectors.Unscrew the plug using a pipe wrench or similar tool and replace the seal. :D

Has anyone done this, I am after advice on what parts I will need to remove to gain access to undo the pipes from the fuel pump. Will I get a lot of fuel spillage when I undo the pipes?

thanks for the replies! its nice to have some more optione without having to disassemble the pump! im not 100% sure where the leak is but it appeared that it was the large gasket on the left of the pump body-which i wouldnt imagine, but it could have been the 3 sided plug you both talk about. i will look at that as well tonight. thanks for all the replies and ideas so far, I was reaching the end of my tether and about to get a mechanic involved but think i will persevere. if anyone else has replaced any other seals or gaskets in the fuel pump without removing it and fully disassembling it i would love to here your experiences/methods many thanks again paul =D> =D> =D> =D>

Good luck and keep us posted Parawaiting. Lessons learned could be usefully added to any factsheet on fixing leaking injectors. Matters little to me unfortunately I tried to do my O rings and did my back in, resulting in a week off work. Can't do jobs like that nay more it seems :(

You don't need any special tools just some spanners and not a lot of leakage either just what's in the pipes. The pipes are easy to remove.

The o ring is easy to repace once you have a tool to undo the stupid triangular nut. I made a socket for it.
Repacing it took all of 15 minutes then.
This is it removed.

Did mine today with the socket from Merlin Diesels. Had to remove injection pipes 1 to 3 (to gain access), but did not need to remove the unions in the back of the fuel pump. The socket comes with a 14mm square spigot which fitted into my torque wrench once I had removed the square driver from it (the torque wrench).

Thats good news. Was there any problem getting the pump to prime and engine to fire afterwards? And can you tell yet if its fixed the leak?

I've got a slightly leaky injector and I'm thinking that as well as the O rings it might be good to get this done at the same time if it is straightforward.

Didn't have to do anything special to prime just turned her over for about 10 to 15 seconds (didn't tough the accelerater) as each cylinder started to catch.

Fixed the leak from the three side bolt however I still have a very slight weep coming from the screw located in the lower righthand corner (looking from the rear forward) of the distribution block (same block that the 3 side bolt is screwed into).

Anyone know what this bolt does?

If you mean the bolt in the middle of the 3 sided nut it is for bleeding the pump. It seals with a copper washer.
