MOT and tyres

Post by squeaky » Wed May 07, 2008 9:01 pm

I took my newly imported Bongo for the MOT last Friday.

I was concerned about the tyres as they are Japanese spec with no "E" marking. I was upfront with the MOT tester and pointed this out, however after referring to the MOT tester manual he couldn't find any reason to fail it. He did advise that both front tyres are starting to crack, so I've ordered a new set of 215/70/15 Nankang tyres from Mytyres for £146. I've also ordered a set of 15" alloys from another site!!

Oh well that's the budget blown :(

There were no other problems except the emissions were high but did pass. I put this down to the Bongo sitting around for quite some time :!:

Just interested why you have chosen oversize tyres? You might, I suppose, get 3.5% better fuel economy through higher gearing, with the equivalent speedo difference. Or did you mean 215/65 x15?

The tyres fitted to my Bongo are 215/70/15 rear and 195/80/15 front.

Pleeeeeeeeze make sure the new boots have the correct load index. At least 92 front, 96 rear.

I came close to meeting my maker recently by ignoring that little point!

Those big 80/70 profiles are listed as an alternative on our plate - just never heart of anyone actually using them, BTW.

Your tyre should have failed the MOT as they are "not suitable for the application" and they were cracked!!
Anyway, I have just fitted four 215/65/15 Hankooks. They are listed as 'heavy duty' tyres and are 98S IIRC.. £55 each and excellent on the road.

Changed my tyre recently, the guys in my local ATS suggested I put heavy duty / van tyres on. Have fitted tyres with a rating of 100. Cost me £240 for a set of 4.
