I'm sure anything is possible given sufficient skill & equipment, but I'm not aware of any Bongo owners who have fitted anything other than the WL-T engine. I did for 30 seconds consider putting a Merc engine in, but it would certainly beyond my engineering skills.

I'm no expert, but I think that with all of the electronics/ engine management systems in modern vehicles it can be more difficult to put different engines in than it used to be. And you also have to match up or adapt radiators and hoses, power steering, exhaust, etc. It seems like it wouldn't be worth it on the bongo: the WLT engine is okay in the first place. Engine swaps are more worthwhile on T3 wasserboxer VW Westfalia campers, which have dismal engines, but the rest of the vehicle is fairly well-designed and excellent for camping. Kits can be bought to power T3s with a 2.2 Subaru engine.
