Video Diagnostic - Knocking? Lend to brother or not ?

Post by alexxb » Sun Apr 13, 2008 6:06 pm

Hi,

I just returned from a long drive yesterday and Bongo started to feel a bit ill -

Developed a knocking noise from sort of front middle. Using some TV magic here it is...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gku-dEIUKDw

Its the secondary knocking in background not the engine idle;). Seems to be quite a common topic on here, but I promised to lend Bongo to my brother on Friday? Anyone have any suggestions - yes / no? or prognosis? :)

THANKS!!!!

Does it do it all of the time, or just on tick-over?

Wow - speedy reply.... Generally fades away while driving for a while (although always slightly knocking in the background), but when I take the foot off the pedal, at junctions etc it seems to get more prominant again (sorry if thats not how you spell prominant) ;).

I think you'll find it's "prominent" actually!

I was hoping you'd say tick-over only - soft engine mountings would let the engine "wobble" and cause some pipework etc. to hit something else. Unfortunately. engines tend to run smoother when under load, so the noises tend to stop. Have you checked for anything loose enough to hit against anything?
When you said the engine started to feel a bit ill, was there a loss of power?

Thanks - No loss of power or anything, doesn't seem to affect the drive at all - its just a ticking noise, definitely dies down on the move. Have looked as hard as I can for something loose, but couldn't see anything ;(

Have a look at the Post 'noise from engine any advice please' in the techie section - turned out to be the crankshaft pully had split, it seems as if the pulley is in two halves with a rubber section between them.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a loose or broken pulley to me. I doubt its anything in the engine as I would expect the rattling/knocking to be regular. Have you tried taking a good look at all the various pulleys? Also the alternator, water pump and air con pump bearings?

It was a Fanbelt :) Easy.

... except i then also decided to change the fuel sender, now if I drive at 50mph suddenly the revs completely drop away and I have to idle at around 1000 revs until I stop. Then it seems to clear itself?

Any suggestions? :( I actually did loan to my brother and now he is broken down in Devon)?
