Aircon and Alt/Fan belt fitting is it hard?
Please could anybody help. Is it difficult to fit the belts. I have just ordered some from Ian and wondered if it has to be a garage job or can a competant person manage this one.
I have a set of sweet chirping birds under the bonnet when she is cold, but not when warm. Is there any distructions anywhere..

Tis a piece of piddles, slacken off the alternator, remove old belts, slide the alternator on its slider, fit new.... Tension the alternator, have about a quarter of an inch of movement in the belts, do the bolts up on the alternator tight, re-tension belts in a week or so as the belts stretch, don't overtension the belts though!
Otherwise you will go

I thought it was going to be easy, but to get the alternator belts off you need to take the air con belt off first. I could not get the tensioner for the air con to release
So taking it to a garage on Friday morning, and the mechanic is going to give me a hand.

Apart from that, it should be straight forward.
I was wondering, is there another bolt on the tensioner for the air con belt, just like the tensioner on the alternator?
I was working from above, and can only see the one long bolt.

There is a large nut (poss 22mm) on the front side of the tensioner pulley. This clamps the pulley bearing to the slotted part. Unless you slacken this off, the long adjusting bolt will have no effect.
When I changed my alternator belts, I couldn't get the new aircon belt on as it was too tight, so ended up using the original

Before you start, does it need changing or just tensioning, and are you sure it is the alternator belt squealing or any other belt?
Just a thought

Re: Aircon and Alt/Fan belt fitting is it hard?
Thank you Muz.. There is no squeeling, it's just literally like a chirp... Only when she is cold.. I know the Cam Belt has been changed on import 2006 but I have no history of anything else being changed. Oh yeh she has been serviced as I found the sticker under the bonnet. But she is due again.
I keep thinking are they just cheap belts.
So.. being on the safe side I ordered some new ones... She needs an oil change and filters (got those). I don't know which one is chirping.. Ady checked a bit back to see if any were obviously loose or worn and he said they look okay.. Like Ian said, they may well be the originals. Who knows..

They often twitter a bit from the air con belt turning on
the air con stops it doesn't really make sense loading it
to stop the squeak but I have noticed it on a few, I
give mine a little squirt of WD40 keeps it quirt for a
few weeks.

I was in a hurry to fit my replacement belts after one almost disintegrated & gathered from AVA that it is much easier to replace them from below. Being in a hurry & not having any ramps or stands to hand I let the local garage do them from underneath - It did look quite a tight squeeze to reach the A/C belt from the top
