3-6 hours to fix stud problem?

Post by mp3oplecarrier » Fri Apr 04, 2008 1:48 pm

Hi,

I believe I have the no.1 stud problem (squeels on starting or revving, fan belts seem tight enough), annoyingly it's taken a while to recognise this because it came shortly after changing the alternator...

I've just been to my local garage and shown them where the engine is (!) and asked for a rough idea of how much to extract and replace a broken stud. They would not commit, but said it would be somewher between 3 and 6 hours labour, and would entail removing the alternator, manifold and turbo. This doesn't sound like the way some people on here are suggesting it goes, are they ripping me off or just cautious?

Also, I think they may have assumed that the missig stud is from the vacant hole visible by the left of the manifold heat shield in the first pic, is that it or is it further to the right under the shield? If so, it looks like it would be easier to get to..

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve
I would try a more "BongoFriendly" garage, as the time to do the job is too much...it can be done by a competant mechanic in less han 1 hour
Cheers
Helen
In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

steve, i had mine done at an engineering shop / garage in erith kent, cost £130 ish, took about 2 hours, ( all parts included )they are called hayne's engineering on the europa trading estate, fraiser road, erith, the owner ( peter hayne's ) did the job himself, all i had to do was show him how the front seats lifted so that he could gain access to the engine compartment, if you need his phone number let me know & i'll post it on here for you, lee

...you've also got a bit of an oil leak around the rocker cover - you might want to get that looked at too. I had all my studs replaced last year at Bellhill, but can't recall the cost. I'm in the process of taking the head off & I would estimate it would take just under an hour to get the manifold off, probably the same to put back again. So 3hrs for the whole job would seem fair. Two things to check:

*Has the stud snapped or just come out? Two of mine came out the head when I undid the nuts, so you may be luck enough to just need a new one screwed in.
*If if has been blowing for a while, the gasket may be distored, so you should consider replacing that too (approx £20)
