hi all,
i did an oil and filter change on my petrol v6.filled the oil to the level i thought(7 litres with oil filter)but i have developed a slight oil leak, from an as yet unidentified source.it`s not apparentlt from the oil filter,or the previously believed-to-be-leaking-but apparently-not rocker cover gasket.
i have since been told by another member that the oil capacity on the v6 is only 4.5 litres after all.is this true?if so,would the excess oil be making its way out of an oil breather pipe somewhere and leaking out that way?
thankyou
jamie

No idea what the capacity is, but it must surely have a dipstick to check the level with? :? Overfilling with oil could well cause it to come out of breathers etc. - get the surplus oil out.

hi,
yes, there is a dipstick-me!!if you imagine the upper and lower marks on the dipstick,it is over the higher mark by the same distance as between the lower and higher marks,if that makes sense?
thanks

It is 4 1/2ltre, i'tll do as much damage as having to little oil, not good :!: I overfilled mine first time i did it, not to 7ltre tho  drained excess off before i started it. Must admit it is a pain in the arse to keep runnin round other side of van to check dip when filling up first time

hi Jamie, judging by the dipstick i would say you have more than enough of the slippy stuff.Running the engine with that much oil in could create a back pressure and blow an oil seal.Drain it off Best of luck Lionel

I bet it smoked like a good un with that much of an overfill eh Hoggman? If you don't possess a "pela pump" type device, just slacken the sump plug a little till it starts to dribble, leave a container under there, till you have guesstimated that 2 or 3 litres has come out... Check the dipstick before you start the engine of course!
