Stuck in Low gears when first starting up

Post by Bigblackbeastiebobbongo » Fri Mar 21, 2008 9:50 pm

I have just read the thread on Throttle position Sensor and I am wondering if we have the same problem. Ours doesnt seem as bad as that though. When first starting up, it seems to be stuck in 3rd for a while, maybe for the first 2 -3 miles and then it changes up ok. It is ok if you are going at less than 40 but if you try to get up to that and over then it wont shift up. I spoke to the lass we bought it off and she said it had done it since they bought it (3 years ago) but had never caused any problems. It seems to be ok when the engine is warm, which is why I am not sure if its the TPS or not. Can you guys shed any light on this? your advice would be much appreciated. Cheers :D

What you describe is perfectly normal - transmission doesn't lock up until ATF is warm enough and you are doing 40ish.

It won't take 4th until there's some warmth in the 'box and engine and will finally take lockup when the needle moves - around the same time as the glowplugs knock off.

I live in the city and although I knew about the lockup temperature delay, I didn't know about 3rd until it was mentioned on here and I drove away from an overnight stay in the styx.
