CV boot replacement...easy way to remove the CV joint?

Sorry I have done a search and looked at numerous topics but am still a bit confused on this. I need to replace the drivers side CV boot - the one nearest the back of the wheel assembly. So I need to split the cv joint some where - but is it easiest at the wheel end or the other end?

There seems to be some conflicting ideas on this - I'm not doing the job - my local mechanic is and I said I'd find the easiest way.

Also do I need to order a new driver shaft nut when I order the boot?

Any ideas / pics / links would be totally cool - or redirect me a thread that maybe I ain't seen. Ta....

Can you not get a split boot kit that'll fit? my neighbour fitted one one his Mitsubishi spacewagon, much easier

Possibly and did think about this but my experience of them in the past is that they only last a few weeks - was looking for a more substantial repair.

Fitted carefully & properly, they should last as long as a normal one, my neighbour did his about 18 months ago & it's still ok, but if you've tried them & not got on with them that's fairy nuff

Have done both my CV gators -the first one -the nearside we managed to get the shaft to come out of the back of the CV joint as the CV joint was seized into the hub. The second one the offside one stubbonly refused to seperate and ended up putting it into a garage to do it and an MOT at the same time - it took them almost 3 hours to seperate the hub and do the job - they are always seized into the hub and you have to replace the hub nut with a new one as they are a one shot nut.

I think I'm going to go with a split boot kit as I may well need to replace the whole CV anyway if it continues to get worse once its been re-greased. At the moment there is no play so I may have got there in time.
