rear fan

Some time ago, I posted asking about the rear fan, but as it gets a BIT cold over here, I've done nothing about it since November. I've replaced the front switch by the driver's knee in order to get the rear fan going again, and still no joy. Ive just pulled the plug off the back of the rheostat control by the rear seat, and I have 12 volts at the switch. Last November I had the rear panel out, and Tony flashed the solder over on the rear resistor, and I checked the small 2 pin connector on the motor...I have 12 volts there, but no operation. I'm told that the switching to the motor is via earth, or negative, switching....is it possible that the resistor is at fault, under the rivetted bit that you can't get at, or would it be a motor fault. If it is the motor, can this be removed from inside the van easily, without disconnecting all the cooling etc.

when i stripped my rear one down to get the resistor out, i just canabilised it as i looked and undid bits and bobs, i realised that it a complete strip down, from underneath up wards

if you can take out the resistor without too much stripping down, take it out and swap it with the front resistor (under the bonnet) if the fan starts with the front resistor then that will give you the answer.

just to note mine is the climate control so it might be a different to get out than yours, but mine was very tight to get out.

on second thoughts Helen, take out the front one simply unplug the conector block for the rear resistor and plug it into the front resistor, saves having to strip it down

, and you will get the to know whats working and what isnt

I've just had the rear panel out AGAIN....looking at the rear fan, I took the front resistor out to put in place of the rear, and , of course , you can't check it that way, as you need current through the front fan in order for the rear to work. Looking at the rear fan from above, there is a branch of the wiring loom that goes to the resistor, and it appears to have 2 wires that go to a socket, the other side of which appears to go towards the motor, Removing the plug, I have 12 volts that is switched on and off by the rear rotary control for the fan, so it would appear that the supply is O.K. Putting a continuity test across the other side of the plug which goes to the motor, there is no continuity....would this indicate that the fan motor is stuffed?

I have just completed the rear fan replacement. I had a fan sent over here. I first removed the rear trim by removing the pocket round the heater controls, and then the two screws holding the slider controls in, so that it can be slid inside the panel....the panel then pulls out easily from the front, then pull the top of the panel, move the front seatbelt , unplug the lamp for the green light bove the heater controls, and pull the rear of the trim...the whole panel can then be lifted forward a couple of inches, and then out. Once you are looking at the fan, there are 2 screws at the top and left of the open vent, and another bolt towards the top and right of the vent, under the carpet. Then remove all the neccessary connector plugs. Having removed these, there is a nut under the sill of the car by the two metal pipes going into the unit . Undo this nut, and the whole lot of the fan casing comes out. The fan is then easy to replace. Refitting is just the reverse, remembering to reconnect all the plugs, and sliding the controls and the lamp above the horizontal moulding on the rear of the trim panel as you refit it.
Hope this is of help, as nobody seemed to have done it when I posted before, and 'phoned around. The fan seems to have just given up the ghost, so we'll strip it later and see why.

Well I've had all the same problems then found there is nothing wrong with the fan at all!

The rear fan in my car only works when the airflow is set to cold/ aircon on/ drawing air from outside.

The fan then works in all positions 1 2 3 4

you do have to flick the dash switch.

It does not work if I select the recycle air position.

It does not work if I select HOT

Hot air gets to the back passively in my van

I thinks thats it, they way its designed for cool/ air conditioned air only?

any more ideas

I can only say that the selecting cables don't seem to go anywhere near any wiring, so it is unlikely that you are going to dislodge a connection, or short anything ....I will say that before the rear motor packed up, it was doing temperamental things...we thought it was the rear speed control playing up.
