Door mirror switch

Post by samuel » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:55 pm

Have just replaced my door mirror switch with a secondhand one as the button which operates to move the whole door mirror has never worked.

Guess what? The replacement switch doesn't do it either. Can anybody guide me in the right direction as to what might be wrong.

In anticipation.

have you checked the fuse 8th one on top row. 15amp.
im in the process of automating the door mirrors so will keep you posted on anything i find that might help you. your gonna have to dig out a multimeter to check the wiring if its not the fuse.

Automating them is something I have thought about. I have not got around to checking how they are powered, is it by reversing the polarity of the motor?

i got a clever man in the process of making up relay boxes to be sold for bongo members that will automatically fold in the mirrors when locking the bongo either by key or remotely and then will open them out when you unlock the bongo.
hopefully have the prototype 2 tomorrow as proto 1 failed, needs to use douple pole relays.the folding switch is on the negative side of the motor and not the expected positive.
once its all working correctly then he will be looking to sell the units for a diy installation, with full instructions and pictures.
as far as my multimeter could tell yes its just a matter of reverving the motor, just like an electric window.unfortunately we havnt managed to get the system working with my window lifter hence the need for the new relay box.

I was thinking along the line of when ignition is on a 5 way relay sends power to mirrors out wire to switch and when off powers them in on other wire. Im assuming that there is stop switch inside the motors. Any thoughts?

there must be some form of stop switch in there. if i remember theres 12v on the pins in the middle of the multiplug. these alternate like a 2 way switch but i think they lose voltage after a while. ie there isnt a constant 12v to the wires. there is an switched 12v on the 3rd pin. the 4 lower pins are for the mirror adjustment.
i trust my friends knowlege with autoelectrics hes been doing them for years. im more used to using 240v electrics.
you should be to get them to operate when you turn off the ignition in the way using a relay. will have a look into that.
i like the idea of having mine rigged in with the alarm system, ie doors lock, windows close and mirrors fold in.
