I know this has been asked before but before fitting a Mason Alarm what is the normal average running temperature of the engine. ie 90 / 100 :?:

Don't know the actual temperature as the gauge doesn't indicate figures but before fitting the alarm the gauge sits at "11 o'clock" - after fitting it is at a more accurate 1 o'clock.

 where are you measuring that temp from?

Glad you asked....

Does that mean when you have the alarm fitted it changes the temp gauge to read 1 oclock then instead of 11

From the passenger side of the block with a digital gauge siliconed in to one of the spare threaded holes above the alternator, why the  ?

Ours usually sits about 94c measured from one of the
threaded holes in the cylinder head, never seen it over
104 and it drops to about 90c or a bit less if in traffic.
The water temp is most likely a bit less than that.

I have a TM2 temp/alarm fitted. The sensor is fitted under one of the bolts that hold the rocker cover on to the inlet side (drivers) of the cylinder head. There is quite a differance there and the same position on the exaust side.
My gauge normally reads between 88 & 94 depending on speed/load. What it reads and where it reads is not really relevant as long as you know what it normally reads wherever you are taking it from. I have set it to alarm at 100 should the temp go above normal.
If I was taking the reading from the exaust side I suspect it would read around 10 higher.

must be flat where you are Haydn, up here in Yorkshire with all the hills our Bongos run hotter

It's pretty flat but the sensor is on the inlet side and her indoors drives and dosn't flog it much. However we do tow a caravan.

so is the inlet side the prefered location of the sensor :?:

Yep.

Sorry if im missing something here peeps isn't the water temp what is important? The temp over the exhaust manifold will differ to the inlet side, what are you monitoring?

I could be wrong, but I though I was measuring the head.Image

It did fall out on me twice before, (mines not siliconed yet, like Missfixit's) whilst driving.

First time, which give a lower temperature when hanging in the air above the manifold cover.

Second time, it landed on the manifold cover, which was too hot for the thermometer to measure, which made my heart beat a bit faster, and my a**e nearly gave way!!!

In general, I also found the readings handy to decide how long after the glowplug lights gone out, before turning the key. So if the engine temp is very low leave it for longer before starting up, and if the engine is still warm, I turn key as soon as the lights extinguish. Which I think is especially usefull, when using veggie oil.

I can easily try it in the other side though, or tape it to a hose? I which case, which hose could I measure?
