Manual Gear box oil.

Post by brorabongo » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:27 am

Any experts out there with manual gearboxes?

I had just got the oil replaced in my bongos gear box.( along with some slick50 additive, I supplied). The oil used was 75w/80. I noticed that changing up the gears were smoother than before but dropping a gear, or two whilst on the move was a job and a half.
I ask the mechanic who did the change, what he thought, and he promtly asked me to bring it back in. we decided to dump the oil used and replace with 75w/90, which is very slightly thicker, and as stated in the manual. What a difference, now it's just as good dropping a gear.

Could the difference between the oils make that much difference from new? or was the slick50 a mistake? :?
Cheers.

Slick 50 a mistake in my books Brora - manual gearboxes rely on friction to operate the synchromesh - Slick 50 is a friction reducer!

Cheers Dandy.

 It did say it was for gear boxes though.

The mechanic though it was the additive that was the problem aswell.

Oh and Dandy....
We will be in down in Glasgow this coming Monday, and might head East before heading home North, so we can have a Toll free run over your bridge!!
